Want to change the attributes of a folder that’s always read-only in Windows 10? This article will show you how to fix this problem.
These days, you usually store a large amount of information on your computer while working with various documents, files and folders.
Therefore, for some people who perform such tasks every day, it is important to be able to change some things in files and folders. However, lately there have been reports of strange behavior in Windows 10.
It seems that whenever you change them in Windows 10, some folders are read-only.
Login as administrator
The first thing to do is to make sure that you are logged in as an administrator on your Windows 10 computer. This gives you complete control over your system and usually solves this particular problem.
Scanning files and programs infected with viruses
Virus or malware damages your entire desktop, even if you recently installed Windows operating system. The “Folder remains read-only” error also occurs due to malicious files and applications.
If you see this issue on your computer screen, quickly launch your antivirus software. Selecting full scan mode will scan files, programs, hidden places, Windows registry, etc.
This will give us a complete list of infected objects (if any). If you find that such files / folders are attacked by malware, delete them from your PC.
Then restart your computer. Open the folder and try to apply all changes. If you are unable to do this, use the methods listed below.

Change folder attribute
If you are already using an administrator account but the folder is still read-only, all you need to do is change its attribute.
- Press Winkey + X and select Command Prompt (Admin) from the list.
- Enter the command to remove the read-only attribute: attrib -r + s drive: \ \
- This removes the read-only attribute from the file and changes it to a system attribute.
- If you want to remove a system attribute from a folder, just type: attrib -r -s drive: \ \ <folder name at the command line.
Make sure the Windows 10 folder is still read-only. I still have a problem.
Change folder permissions
Changing the permissions is the most common way to solve the problem. Here’s how it’s done
Step 1. Right-click the drive containing the affected folder or files and select Properties.
Step 2. In the Properties window go to the Security tab and click the Advanced button.
Step 3. In the new window, click Change Permissions.
Step 4. Select the user whose permissions you want to change and click “Change”.
Step 5. Select this folder, subfolders and files from the Applies to drop-down menu.
Step 6. Check the “Full Control” box in the “Basic Permissions” section. Now click OK to save these changes.
