A setting in Windows 10 blocks the loading of drivers and causes problems with the associated hardware for some users.

Microsoft has confirmed that the memory integrity setting in Windows security prevents the loading of some drivers. In some cases, the drivers cannot be installed, but even if installation is possible, the problem may cause problems with a number of hardware devices.

Check if the drivers are up to date


The first thing to check is whether a new or updated driver is available from Windows Update or the manufacturer of that driver.

If you cannot find a compatible driver to solve the problem, you can disable the memory integrity setting in Windows Security to bypass the error message “A driver cannot load on this device.

To disable the memory integrity setting

Microsoft points out that the “Memory Integrity” security feature may prevent the correct installation of drivers on Windows 10 devices. The company recommends that administrators try to find an updated driver that may not have the problem. Updated drivers may be available through Windows Update or provided by device manufacturers.

If this is not possible because there is no newer driver than the one that cannot be installed, Microsoft suggests that administrators disable the system memory integrity feature.

  • Go to the Kernel Isolation page in Windows Security.
  • Disable the memory integrity setting if it is not already disabled. You must reboot your computer for the changes to take effect.
  • Under Core Isolation, select Core Isolation Details.
  • Disable the memory integrity setting, if it is not already disabled.
  • Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.


Microsoft points out that the “minor vulnerability” that prevents the driver from loading is “most likely not malicious in any way”. The company adds that if you can’t find an updated driver for the software, “it would be a good idea to contact them and see if there is a solution soon”.

The solution is simple, but Microsoft had nothing to say about a permanent solution to the problem. In fact, the notes on the help page give the impression that the fault lies with the driver manufacturers. So, if Microsoft does not provide future updates on the situation, this may be the only way to fix the bug.
