If you are a regular user of Windows 10 and use it often enough to store hundreds of thousands of photos, chances are you will access it mainly through thumbnails. Other views such as details, list and icons seem quite inappropriate and irrelevant for images. What happens if the thumbnail cache seems to be periodically destroyed? It can be boring. A recent bug in Windows 10 Falls Creators Update v1709 caused this problem. This error forces Windows to remove the thumbnail cache after each restart or shutdown. If your Windows 10 thumbnail cache continues to clear, you can use this registry trick to prevent Windows 10 from automatically clearing the thumbnail cache after each restart.
The error identified as an automatic maintenance task called SilentCleanup causes the thumbnails to disappear at each start. All you have to do to solve this problem is stop the task.
Please note that the method requires changes in the registry settings. Therefore, be extremely careful before proceeding.
Open the’Run’ dialog box, type ‘regedit‘ and press’Enter’.
Then navigate to the next key-
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerVolumeCachesThumbnail Cache
If you detect here, that the entries for cleaning the disk with a value Autorun DWORD DWORD are set to 1, this means that the’SilentCleanup’ function is activated and that automatic execution can clear the thumbnail cache.
To cancel this change, simply right-click Autorun and select the Edit option, as shown in the following screenshot.
Change the value under the field from 1 to 0 indicating OFF.
Similarly, locate the following registry editor entry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREWOW6432NodeMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerVolumeCachesThumbnail Cache
When you find it again, that most disk cleaning inputs with Autorun having a value of 1 set to 0, change it to 0 set to OFF.
That’s it !
You prevented Windows 10 from automatically clearing the thumbnail cache on reboot. Simply close Registry Editor and restart your PC for the changes to take effect.
Thumbnails should greatly facilitate navigation in the file explorer by providing a thumbnail view of all file types, whether photos, videos or documents. Such inconveniences can undermine your Windows experience.
