Now that Windows 8 DP is out, many people want to try it. There are several virtualization programs that allow you to try Windows 8 on a machine without affecting your machine configuration, as it can be run from the current configuration. We have already seen it in the article on installing Windows 8 on VirtualBox.

Many of these virtualization programs require one Hardware Assisted Virtualization or HAV. This is available in processors that include a virtualization option for specific processors with Intel virtualization technology (Intel VT) or AMD virtualization technology (AMD-V).

So how can you check if your Windows PC supports virtualization?

Microsoft has provided a tool called the Hardware Assisted Virtualization Detection Tool (HAV) that checks whether the computer processor supports HAV and whether this setting is enabled.

If you run this tool and your system virtualization is supported and the setting is enabled in BIOS, you will see:

And if your PC supports it but is not enabled in BIOS, you will get the following:

Then you must enable HAV from BIOS.

So if you want to try Windows 8 DP on your PC with a virtual machine, or just check if your Windows computer supports virtualization, download and run this tool. Of course, you can always perform a clean installation or a dual installation if your PC does not support virtualization and meets the minimum requirements to run this operating system.
