Microsoft has announced Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 18990 to Fast ring insiders, that enables automatic restart for UWP apps and brings improvements on Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL).

This Insider update also includes Xbox Game Bar updates, adds the ability to reset your PC from the cloud, and other improvements, features and fixes.

If you’re a Windows Insider in the Fast ring, you can update to the Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 18990 by going to Settings -> Update & Security -> Windows Update and checking for new updates.

Enabling automatic restart for UWP applications

Last month, Microsoft introduced a new separate setting to control whether the desktop applications registered from your previous login session are restarted when you log back into Windows. In the latest versions of Insider Preview, if you select this setting, most open UWP applications will now be automatically restarted in addition to the registered desktop applications! To reduce sign-in time, UWP applications are minimized and restarted in the suspended state, giving Windows and other applications more resources to start. To try it out:

1. Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in Options and activate “Automatically save my restartable apps when I sign out and restart them after I sign in.” under “Restart apps”.
2. Start one or more UWP applications, for example a Feedback Hub.
3. Log out, then log back into Windows.

UWP applications that have been started, such as Feedback Hub, must be restarted minimized with a button on the taskbar.

Improvements to the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL)

• Improved performance for directory listings in \\\wsl$.
• [WSL2] Injection of additional boot entropy [Github Issue 4461]
• [WSL2] Fixed Windows interop when using su / sudo commands [Github 4465 problem].

Xbox Game Bar Updates

If you haven’t seen it yet, we’ll start with the introduction of an FPS counter and achievement overlay! Thank you to all those who provided us with their comments. The update will be done via the Microsoft Store. Focus on your favorite game and press WIN + G to start.

We fixed an issue where right-clicking on File Explorer’s search box didn’t bring up a context menu that could be used to paste clipboard contents.

We fixed an issue resulting in the credentials prompt sometimes not appearing when connecting to certain VPNs from the network flyout, so it said Connecting but never completed the connection.

We fixed an issue where sometimes Magnifier window became completely black after switching from lens mode to dock mode.

We have made it clearer how “Read from here” works in Magnifier.

Table navigation hotkeys are now allowed when entering a list view to allow one to navigate across columns while using Narrator.

We improved the Narrator’s Page Summary dialog by allowing tab and shift-tab to loop around the dialog controls.

Narrator will no longer announce notifications from non-focused Chrome webpages.

Narrator now announces the current value of the “thumb” in legacy color picker controls.

Narrator is now presenting links and play buttons correctly in iTunes.

We improved Narrator’s reading experience in Chrome and Firefox. Certain pages could cause Narrator to loop back up to previous content.

Narrator is now updating an attached braille display correctly when some XAML controls are expanded.

Thank you to everyone who shared feedback about the design of the input mode switcher on the taskbar for the Simplified and Traditional Chinese IMEs. We’ve adjusted the design based on your feedback that the icon glyph was large and blurry.

We fixed an issue where some Chinese characters in the Common Standard Chinese Characters dictionary couldn’t be input with the new version of the Simplified Chinese IME.

We fixed an issue where, when switching to English input mode and back to Chinese input mode, the punctuations would become Chinese punctuations, even if “Use English punctuations when in Chinese input mode” was enabled with the new version of Simplified Chinese IME.

We fixed an issue where the new version of Simplified Chinese IME candidate window would sometimes not appear.

We fixed an issue where the new version of the Traditional Chinese Bopomofo IME didn’t show candidates or next phrase candidates on touch keyboard.

We fixed an issue where characters typed with the new version of Chinese Traditional IMEs weren’t committed by Enter key when using certain games.

We fixed an issue where the legacy language bar didn’t show IME mode icons while using the new version of Japanese IME, Chinese Traditional IME, or Korean IME.

On Thursday Microsoft launched Windows 10 Preview Build 18980 to Insiders in the Fast ring, a build that adds update on Cortana and improvements on Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL).

This Insider update also includes update on the Optional Features settings section as well as other features, improvements, and numerous fixes.

If you’re a Windows Insider in the Fast ring, you can update to the Preview Build 18980 by going to Settings -> Update & Security -> Windows Update and checking for the latest update.

An update on Cortana

In response to your comments, Microsoft is implementing a plan to make it easier for all Windows clients to use Cortana. First, starting with today’s version, all insiders around the world will see the Cortana icon and the new application. In a future update of the Cortana application, customers will be able to use Cortana when they speak a supported language, regardless of the display language of their operating system. The new Cortana application currently supports English (USA) – since Cortana is supported by the services, we can and will add other languages beyond the limits of build OS updates in the coming months. We plan to support 20 of the same regions and languages we currently support in retail by the time of launch in the first half of this year. We will give you more details about our language introduction projects as they progress and we thank you for your patience during this transition period.

Improvements to the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL)

In this version, we have added WSL2 support for ARM64 devices! We also added the ability to define the default user for your distribution using the /etc/wsl.conf file. This version also contains several bug fixes, including a long-standing problem with older Windows symlinks (for example in the user profile directory).

Update on the Optional Features Settings section improvements

These changes are now available to all insiders in Fast! Many thanks to those who have already tried it and provided us with their comments. If the experience comes only to you, we look forward to hearing from you! To briefly summarize, among other things, we have added multi-select, search and generally done work to facilitate the use of this section easily:

General changes, improvements, and fixes for PC

There was an upgrade block on the previous flight in order to ensure that Insiders with certain versions of Outlook weren’t impacted by an issue in the build, which resulted in some insiders not finding the build when they checked for updates last week. This has been removed with this flight.

We fixed a deadlock in netprofmsvc.dll that was occurring in recent builds. Symptoms for those impacted potentially included upgrade to the build freezing at 98%, or (if you were able to upgrade,) various aspects of the system unexpectedly freezing and becoming unresponsive.

We’ve done some work to help address an issue where Outlook wouldn’t launch if you clicked an incoming email notification.

We fixed an issue impacting touch keyboard reliability in recent builds.

We fixed an issue impacting WIN+(Period) reliability.

We’ve made the decision to return to the retail build version of the Korean IME while we work on addressing feedback Insiders shared with us about the updated IME experience.

We fixed an issue impacting screen snipping reliability in the last few flights.

We fixed an issue that could result in the login screen acrylic on the previous flight sometimes unexpectedly showing squares around UI elements.

We fixed an issue that could result in certain app thumbnails going unexpectedly blank when you right-clicked them in Task View.

We fixed an issue where removable devices were erroneously labeled as HDD in Task Manager’s performance tab. They will now be labeled Removable.

As some Insiders have noticed, to give you the option to save disk space if needed, we’ve converted MS Paint and WordPad into Optional Features. You can choose to uninstall them or reinstall them via Optional Features in Settings.

We’ve made some adjustments to help improve performance of the Apps & Features page in Settings when searching.

We fixed an issue that could result in Settings crashing when updating your account picture.

Ease of Access settings are no longer participating in settings synchronization (roaming). Accordingly, we have now removed the Ease of Access toggle in Settings > Accounts > Sync your settings.

Magnifier reading now works better in applications like Google Chrome and Firefox.

Magnifier reading no longer clicks the application when using the “Read from here” button or the Ctrl + Alt + Left Mouse Click keyboard shortcut.

We fixed an issue where the text cursor indicator would not display when switching between left-to-right and right-to-left languages.

We fixed an issue where the text cursor indicator would sometimes appear on read-only areas of the screen.

We fixed an issue where the text cursor indicator would appear over the Start menu instead of staying in the Search edit box after typing text in the Search edit box.

Improved the ability of reading the title of the window with Narrator while reading messages in Outlook.

Improved auto-reading in Outlook with Narrator to make it more reliable.

Made changes to more reliably read the message headers using Narrator while reading when using the Shift + Tab command while in Scan Mode.

Improved the verbosity of Narrator when reading lists at verbosity level one.

We fixed an issue where an edit field on some webpages was not getting properly updated on a configured braille display when editing the contents with Narrator.

We fixed an issue where certain Local Experience Packs (LXPs) may revert to English.

We fixed an issue resulting in certain Wi-Fi adapters not being able to load (code 10 error) after upgrading from a previous release of Windows and needing to be disabled and re-enabled for it to work.

Microsoft is rolling out Build 18975 (20H1) to Insiders in the Fast ring, that brings the ability to move the Cortana window and improvements to the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL).

This Insider update also includes preview and code release of PowerToys, adds update on Virtual Desktop renaming, as well as other features, improvements, and various fixes.

Introducing the ability to move the Cortana window

With the new conversational Cortana experience, we understand that you sometimes want to keep the chat running, and that the default window position is not always the one you prefer if you want a longer back and forth. That’s why we start by introducing the option to move the window (by dragging the title bar) to any place on the screen – just like any other window. You can also resize the window if you wish. Currently, this change is being introduced on 50% of insiders with the new Cortana experience, and we will continue the deployment while confirming the quality of the experience.

Announcement on the first preview and code release of PowerToys

Yesterday, Microsoft announced the first preview and code version release of PowerToys for Windows 10. This first overview includes two utilities: the Windows key shortcut guide and a window manager called FancyZones.

Virtual Desktop renaming Update

The ability to rename your virtual desktops is now available to all insiders in Fast Ring! Thank you again to all those who provided us with their comments on this subject.

To start:

1. Open the Task View by selecting the Task View icon in the taskbar or by pressing WIN+Tab.
2. Select New Desktop.
3. Select the name of the desktop (“Desktop 1”) and it should become editable, or right-click on the desktop thumbnail and a context menu with a Rename entry will appear.
4. Enter any name and press Enter.
5. It’s done!

General changes, improvements, and fixes for PC

We fixed an issue resulting in the “Bluetooth and Other Devices” and “Printers and Scanners” not rendering correctly in the last two flights.

We fixed an issue resulting in search crashing on launch for Insiders using certain display languages, including Polish.

We fixed an issue resulting in some Insiders receiving error 0xC0000142 when attempting to upgrade to recent builds.

We fixed a recent issue resulting in some Insiders finding that various File Explorer settings were unexpectedly modified, and in some cases couldn’t be corrected. This impacted File Explorer’s navigation pane visibility, the option for the navigation pane to automatically show all folders, and showing the drive letters. Please note that while this fix will stop it from happening, if you were impacted, you will need to take steps to return these settings in File Explorer to be their desired state.

We fixed an issue resulting in the minimize, maximize, and close title bar buttons not working for certain apps.

For those who would prefer not to see the post upgrade setup page, we’ve added a new option to turn it off under Notification Settings. Note, it will only be visible for users eligible for seeing this setup page.

We fixed an issue where the text candidate list, when typing in Korean using the touch keyboard, was in reverse order.

We updated the Chinese Pinyin IME toolbar to now be light when using light theme.

We fixed an issue that could result in the Chinese Pinyin IME not responding the first time you tried to select a text candidate in certain types of text fields.

We fixed an issue that could result in the mouse cursor becoming transparent and not visible when HDR was enabled.

We fixed an issue where if MS Paint was open in the background, using the arrow keys would result in the mouse cursor changing position despite MS Paint not being in focus.

We fixed an issue when using your PC in Arabic or Hebrew, where when maximizing win32 apps you could see the title bar flip for a second to show the close button on the right instead of on the left.

We fixed an issue impacting Action Center reliability in the previous flight.

We’ve made some adjustments to help address potential out of memory issues over Remote Desktop that could result in you being unexpectedly logged out of your remote session.

We fixed an issue resulting in not being able to setup Windows Hello during OOBE.

We’ve updated our upgrade logic so that going forward, your preferred scheduled defragmentation settings will be preserved on upgrade. Thanks to those who shared feedback about this.

We’ve made some improvements to help address out of memory issues resulting in users potentially getting logged out of remote desktop sessions.

We fixed an issue impacting Your Phone reliability in recent flights that resulted in seemingly random crashes during use.

We fixed an issue where, when taking a screenshot using the pen after rotating your device, the screenshot might not be in the expected orientation.

We fixed an issue when taking a snip that could result in your screenshot being unexpectedly blacked out.

We have removed the option to change Magnifier UI to a magnifying glass and be in the viewport. We would be interested to hear if this option was useful to you and why.

Magnifier reading now supports reading in more places.

Several issues have been resolved that caused the Magnifier UI not to scale or resize correctly when users adjusted the Make text bigger or the Make everything bigger settings.

We resolved an issue where users could not use some Magnifier hotkeys after sign-in until Magnifier was restarted.

We resolved an issue where Magnifier Docked and Lens mode would turn into Full Screen mode when User Account Controls were active.

We resolved an issue in Notepad where the text cursor would display, but the text cursor indicator would not.

We resolved an issue in Notepad where the text cursor indicator prevented users from double-clicking to select text.

We resolved an issue where the text cursor indicator preview in Ease of Access settings was not usable when Dark Mode is enabled.

We resolved an issue where the text cursor indicator was randomly filling in with black.

We fixed an issue with Narrator stopping early when reading certain dialogs.

Based on user feedback, we enhanced Narrator’s reading experience when arrowing through messages in Outlook. When the importance column is read the “importance” header is always spoken before the high or low. If a message has been flagged that column’s information will be spoken immediately after the importance column instead of at the end.

We fixed a bug where Narrator did not play the error sound in certain scenarios.

We raised the volume of Narrator’s link and scroll sounds.

We fixed a bug when the Narrator page summary was not working in the Chrome browser.

We fixed a bug where assistive technology (e.g. Narrator, Magnifier, NVDA) were starting after sign-in when only the before sign-in setting was set.

Narrator is now presenting “flash messages” on a configured braille display as expected for reading the window title and when presenting suggested content.

Today, Microsoft released 19H2 Build 18362.10014 and Build 18362.10015 for Windows Insider in the Slow Ring. As a reminder, Microsoft is currently testing the ability to provide these updates with features that are disabled by default so that they can be enabled through controlled feature deployments. This helps them to get better feedback on the overall quality of the construction. A subset of insiders of the Slow ring have disabled the default features, and another subset has enabled them by default.

This means that not everyone in the Slow ring immediately sees new features:

• If you are on 19H2 build 18362.10012 – you will get build 18362.10014 with the features disabled by default. This includes the features listed below as well as the features of the previous version.
• If you are on 19H2 build 18362.10013 – you will get build 18362.10015 with features enabled by default.

If you are on the Windows update May 10, 2019 and you simply plug your PC into the Slow ring to receive 19H2 updates, it will be a virtual “draw” to determine if your PC’s features are enabled or not.

Apart from an update, the features are disabled and the other activated – the two updates published today and highlighted above are identical and include the following features in addition to what was included in the last update 19H2:

Microsoft has enabled Windows Defender Credential Guard for ARM64 devices to provide additional protection against credential theft for companies that use ARM64 devices in their business.

Microsoft has enabled enterprises to complete the Windows 10 in S Mode policy to enable Microsoft Intune’s traditional Win32 (desktop) applications.

The search box in the File Explorer is updated to be powered by Windows Search. This change will help you integrate your OneDrive content online with traditional indexed results.

They have added the ability for Narrator and other assistive technologies to read and learn where the FN key on the keyboards is located and in what state it is (locked or not).
