The new Microsoft service agreement requires you to sign up for services at least once every 270 days if the service is free. This confirms that you continue to use the service. If you do not have access to the Services for 270 days, you may lose access to the Services.

For paid services, Microsoft reserves the right to terminate your account or any part of the services you use if you do not pay on time.

The service contract indicates if you or Microsoft deactivate an account, all data associated with that account will be deleted and Microsoft has no obligation to return the content. This is how you should save the content you store in the cloud. It’s also a good decision to keep an up-to-date backup of the content you store somewhere in the cloud.

There are free and paid services that allow you to create backups of different types of data. For example, you can use Backupify to back up certain social networking sites. For emails, I suggest automatic forwarding to another address while keeping a copy in your Microsoft account.

Microsoft collects information about users

Microsoft’s new terms of use for the above services indicate that Microsoft collects information about you when you register for their services. They may also share this information with law enforcement agencies or to protect Microsoft’s rights.

If you live in the United States, you may be particularly interested in Section 10 of the Microsoft Services Agreement, which describes the following:

  1. Binding arbitration and
  2. Class action waiver
