A GIF is a fun way to communicate with friends, as users send moving images that support their thoughts, feelings or moods. With WhatsApp, users can send and receive GIFs, and the application has a library of stored GIFs. Senders can edit the image as a static image and add a caption.

To create your own WhatsApp GIFs

If you can’t find the right GIF for you, you can create your own GIF.

  • Just tap the paper clip icon in the upper right corner and select the gallery.
  • Then select a video that you want to convert to a GIF.
  • You will be taken to a video editor, where you will need to tap the camcorder icon in the top right corner.
  • You can then edit the video, which should be no longer than six seconds.
  • Then add a caption if necessary, and press the green arrow to send it.

Here you will be greeted by the yellow emoji that you can send in WhatsApp, but in the middle of the lower part of the screen there is a small button that says GIF. On the other side, there is also the button with the stickers.

Press the word GIF and you will immediately be greeted with a selection of the most popular GIFs of the moment. These are pulled by a service called Tenor GIFs.

You can scroll down the page to browse through all the popular options, or by pressing the magnifying glass in the lower left corner, you can search for something specific.

Once you have entered your search, you can then scroll down the page to see all the searches. Then simply press the GIF you are interested in to see a full screen preview. From there, you can add a message if you wish and press the arrow to send it.

Sending GIFs in WhatsApp for Web

In WhatsApp Web, you can only send GIFs using the GIPHY feature. To access GIPHY, click the smiley icon on the left side of the chat bar, and then click the GIF icon in the lower left corner.

Restrictions

Unfortunately, WhatsApp does not support linking animated GIFs. If you try to send a link to a GIF, the link is sent correctly. In some cases, you may receive an embedded image online, but the preview will not animate.

In WhatsApp Web, you cannot download custom GIFs from your computer. WhatsApp converts a downloaded GIF to a static JPEG and displays a warning message in the title bar: “This file has been modified from the original. Read more”. When you click “More Information,” a message appears stating that “Custom GIF animations are currently not supported. There does not appear to be any reason why this limitation applies only to WhatsApp Web.
