Recently, some users of the popular platform encountered a strange error message: “The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.” This error message usually appears when a user tries to upload peer-to-peer files.

This problem affects several BitTorrent builds, but the situation could change dramatically if the developers release an update that solves all the problems in the near or distant future. Until then, however, we will have to settle for a few solutions to the problem.

What causes BitTorrent error “Process cannot access file”?

Third-party AV intervention: Another scenario that has been shown to cause this error is AV package intervention that quarantines parts of the torrent files (either for legitimate reasons or because of a false positive). If this scenario applies, you can avoid it by whitelisting the torrent folder, disabling the AV package, or removing it completely.

Torrent uploaded to a cloud storage application: It turns out this problem can also occur if you have uploaded a torrent to a location that is also managed by a cloud storage service such as OneDrive, DropBox, or Drive. To solve this problem, simply upload the file again to a different location outside of the storage service’s scope.

The file is currently being used by another application: Most often, this error occurs when the torrent client tries to write to a file that is being accessed by another process or application. This problem is most often caused by the Finder, a file indexing program, or an ISO editing program. To fix it, you will need to stop the other application when BitTorrent tries to write to it.

Whitelisting your BitTorrent download folder

If you do not want to remove your AV package, another solution is to add the BitTorrent download folder to the whitelist of your AV package. This will prevent your AV package from interfering with the peer-to-peer content being downloaded via BitTorrent.

  1. First, run the RUN dialog box by pressing the Windows + R key combination.
  2. Now type “ms-settings:windowsdefender” in the empty dialog box, then click This will launch Windows Defender on your screen.
  3. On the Windows Defender screen, go to the right-hand menu and click on the Open Windows Security option.
  4. On the next screen, click on the Virus and Threat Protection option.
  5. In the Virus and Threat Protection settings menu, select Manage Settings > Add Exclusions (under Exclusions).
  6. Then go to the folder that is the default location for each BitTorrent download, add it to the list of excluded items and save the changes.
  7. Then check to see if the problem has been fixed.

Close any application processes that are interfering with BitTorrent

The main reason that can cause the BitTorrent “Process cannot access file” error could be other application processes running in parallel.

In this case, the first solution is to make sure that no other third-party application is running in parallel and trying to write data to the same files as BitTorrent.

  1. First, press the key combination Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open the Task Manager window.
  2. Now, in the Task Manager window, scroll through the list of processes, find the entries that might belong to the problem applications, right-click on them and select End Task.

Uninstalling a third-party antivirus program

  1. Launch the RUN dialog box by pressing the Windows + R key combination.
  2. Now type “appwiz.cpl” in the empty dialog box and click OK. The Programs and Features menu will open.
  3. Scroll through the list of programs and features and find the antivirus package installed on your system.
  4. Right-click on the antivirus package and select Uninstall from the pop-up menu.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the uninstallation, then restart your computer.
  6. Now check if the problem has been solved or not.

Re-download the file outside the cloud storage application

To solve this problem, first, delete the torrent from the cloud storage application. Then download it again to a regular location outside Google Drive, OneDrive, or DropBox.

  1. First, launch BitTorrent and right-click on the torrent that caused the error.
  2. Now select Delete from the context menu, then click .torrent + Delete Data.
  3. Double-click on the .torrent file again, and then select the location that is out of range of your cloud storage.
  4. This definitely solves the BitTorrent “Process cannot access the file” error.
