When you try to run chkdsk to repair a hard disk, you receive the error message “This type of file system is RAW. Chkdsk is not available for RAW drives.” Anyway, what’s wrong with the hard drive? Suppose the disk has so many important files stored on it, and a chkdsk tool complains that it is unable to work on a hard disk with the raw file system, how can you repair the hard disk without losing data?
What does CHKDSK mean is not available for RAW disks?
In other words, the CHKDSK command cannot be used on the disk formatted in RAW. Therefore, Windows cannot perform a hard disk scan for this drive. In fact, many Windows commands do not work on RAW drives because Windows does not have access to this drive. So you may wonder what a RAW drive is.
A RAW drive refers to a drive that Windows has not formatted in a readable file system such as NTFS, FAT32, or exFAT. Then it also occurs on internal hard disks or SSDs. Sometimes a drive becomes RAW due to a damaged file system or serious defective sectors. The data on this reader is unreadable, not to mention other operations.

After understanding what a RAW drive is and why CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives on SD card or other storage media, it is important to know how to solve this problem.
What is a RAW drive (or RAW file system)?
The properties of the raw disc provide the following information: The flashcard file system is raw and has not been formatted in NTFS or FAT.
On Windows, partitions with an unknown file system are marked RAW. It occurs when none of the system pilots have been able to recognize the FS type. In the case of Windows operating systems, we speak of exFAT, FAT(32) and NTFS.
This means that RAW is not a file system, but a failure of a partition on a hard disk or other data storage device.
Format the RAW drive to the NTFS/FAT32/exFAT file system
If there is no important data on the RAW drive, the format is the best choice, just right-click on the RAW drive in My Computer (This PC) or Disk Management and select “Format…” to format it.
Step 1: Right-click on the RAW drive in My Computer (this PC) or Disk Management.
Step 2: Select “Format…”.
Step 3: Select the NTFS file system, then define more information about the format (size of the association unit, volume label, format options).
Step 4: Click Start to format the RAW drive in NTFS.
Clean boot
If you are having problems with a hard drive other than the one on which your system is currently located, or if the magnitude of the error is not serious enough to prevent you from starting your computer, you can always use the Clean Boot method.
Clean Boot ensures that you disable all third-party applications and services at startup and checks if the problem persists. Otherwise, turn on the applications one at a time to see what is causing the problems!
