Whether you’ve upgraded to Windows 10 or purchased a brand new PC with the operating system pre-installed, you’ll find that Microsoft Edge is the default browser. Your default browser is the one that opens when you click on a link in your email, in the Windows search box or in other applications such as your instant messenger, so this is very important.
Google Chrome is a free web browser developed by Google. It was first released in 2008 for Microsoft Windows and has slowly found its way to all other operating systems. It has a 54% market share across all Internet platforms and this figure is expected to increase in the future.
No matter how popular a software program is, there are also technical peculiarities. One of the biggest problems users face is that they cannot set Google Chrome as their default browser. In many ways, Microsoft Edge is outdated and less user-friendly than Chrome. Setting Google Chrome as the default browser is a fairly straightforward task. Take a look at this.
Set as default browser during installation
After downloading and installing Chrome for the first time, you will be asked if you want to make it your default browser. If so, select Yes.
If you missed this chance, every time you open a Chrome tab, you’ll receive a message asking if you want to make it your default browser.
Using Chrome Browser Settings
- Starting Google Chrome
- Click on the 3 vertical points in the upper right corner of the window
- Select parameters
- In the left pane, select the option Standard browser
- Set Chrome as the default browser

- Step 2 : Click “Start Scan” to find Windows registry issues that could be causing PC problems.
- Step 3 : Click “Repair All” to fix all issues.
Using the Registry
But if it still doesn’t work, I have a simple solution. I’ve exported the relevant registry keys from my Windows registry, which Google Chrome has set as the default browser, and created a registry fix file that you can download from the link below. All you need to do is first create a system restore point, then open and restart the Registry Editor file and its contents in your registry to see the results.
Configuring the Default Browser from the Control Panel
In your control panel, you have a section dedicated to defining default programs for each file type. We can take a look at your control panel and change the setting from there. If you make changes in the Control Panel, the program settings will be automatically overwritten; this method will probably work for you.
- Press the Windows + R key to access the “Control Panel” of the run type in the dialog box to launch the Control Panel of your PC.
- Once you are in the Control Panel, click on “Programs” in the lower left corner of the options list.
- Here you will see the “Default Programs” option. Click on it.
- Once you are in the “Default Programs” window, select “Set Default Programs”.
- It may now take a few seconds for your computer to compile all the programs into one list. When the list is complete, search for Google Chrome.
- Now select the “Set this program as default” option.
If you follow each of these steps, you can make Google Chrome your default web browser. Now, all external links you click will open in Chrome.
