Google Chrome is very often updated. You may not have noticed this because Google automatically updates and installs the latest stable version of Chrome. Even Firefox tries to play the catch-up game, but I still don’t think they’ll ever catch up if Chrome is already in version 16 and Firefox only in v9…. Anyway, have you ever wondered what will happen if Google Chrome is updated? Will the new version replace the old one? Or will the old version be automatically uninstalled? The answer is that the previous version of Google Chrome will be kept and not deleted. If you check the folder where Google Chrome is installed, you will notice that there are 2 folders with different version numbers and two executable chrome files (chrome.exe and old_chrome.exe).

Obviously, chrome.exe with the most recent version number is the most up-to-date chrome while old_chrome.exe and the folder with the old version number is outdated. A likely reason why the old version is still kept for rollback purposes, but the official Chrome FAQ page mentions that it does not recommend resetting Google Chrome to a previous version.

With these files, you can reset your current version to the previous version. Although we’re not talking about gigabytes of lost space like iTunes backups, it’s a feature you’ll probably never use if you’re like me.
