If you use Skype and own an Amazon Alexa device, you can encourage them to join forces and make calls to 150 countries around the world. Yes, Microsoft has transferred its Skype calling service to Alexa-compatible devices, starting with the Amazon Echo series.
With this new service, 100 free minutes per month for two months. All you have to do is link your Skype account to the Alexa application. You don’t have to do anything else to activate the free minutes.
But before you can use it, you need to link your Skype and Amazon accounts.
Here’s what you need to make Skype calls with Alexa:
- An Alexa compatible device compatible with the latest version of the Alexa application. Learn more about Alexa.
- The person you want to call must be using the latest version of Skype.
- Enable Alexa communication in the Alexa application.
- Link Skype to your Amazon account in the Alexa application:
- Open the Alexa application and select the menu.
- Select Settings.
- Select Communication, then Skype.
- Sign in to Skype, then follow the on-screen steps to connect Skype to Alexa.
You can then ask Alexa to call one of your Skype contacts, regardless of the device used, according to Microsoft, simply by saying “Alexa, Skype[name]”. You can also answer calls by saying “Alexa, answer”. If the person you want to call is not on Skype, you can read their phone number aloud and call them saying “Alexa, call 206-555-0155 on Skype”.

Last year, Microsoft had difficulty marketing Cortana as a consumer-oriented language assistant. This partnership with Amazon is the last attempt to finally work with Alexa. In August, the companies published a Cortana Skill for Alexa and an Alexa Skill for Cortana that allows you to use one of them wherever you can use the other. And earlier this month, Amazon released a Windows 10 application that allows you to use Alexa on any PC.
Skype’s integration with Alexa is another step in an increasingly close partnership between Seattle’s two neighbours, Microsoft and Amazon. While Amazon recently launched the Alexa application for Windows, Xbox One now supports Alexa.
