You can start or join a Meet video conference directly from your Gmail inbox using the buttons that Google has placed on the left side of the page.

But what if you don’t want to use Meet, or you just don’t want it to be available all the time? Don’t worry, you can hide the buttons (Note: if you have a G Suite Corporate account, you may not be able to change it, depending on your administrator’s settings).

  • Click the Settings button (the cogwheel) in the top right corner of your Gmail window.
  • Select the Settings option from the drop-down menu.
  • In the Settings window, click the Chat and Meetings tab, then check the Hide Meetings box on the main menu, and then click the Save Changes button at the bottom.
  • The Gmail window will refresh and… more Google Meet buttons.

You can of course undo this by following the same steps if you change your mind and want to use Google Meet.

Move Meet to the Right

If you don’t want to completely disable the chat option in Gmail, you can try toggling the Meetings tab on the right side of your Gmail screen instead. That way, the Meet interface wouldn’t conflict with the labels on the left side of the screen that you primarily interact with.

To move the Meet tab to the right side, open Gmail, click the Gear icon in the top right corner, and select Settings. Now click the ‘Advanced’ tab. Then click the ‘Enable’ button for the chat option on the right. This option can also be found under the ‘Chat’ tab in the Gmail settings.
