Code error 43 is one of several error codes in the Device Manager. It is generated when the device driver stops a hardware device because the device has reported an unspecified problem to Windows.

This generic message may mean that it is a genuine hardware problem, or it may simply mean that there is a driver error that Windows cannot identify as such, but is affecting the hardware.

Details about Device Manager error codes, such as code 43, are available in the Device Status section of the device properties.

Troubleshooting the Hardware and Devices

Connect the device and perform hardware troubleshooting. Then restart the computer and check the status.

Follow these steps:

  • Press the Windows + W key on the keyboard.
  • Type “Troubleshooting” in the search box and then press the Enter key.
  • Click on Hardware and Sound, and then troubleshoot the hardware and devices.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions. Then restart the computer and check the status.

Check bcdUSB and fid_URB_Hdr_Status (Windows 8.1)

  • Take a USB-ETW trace for the enumeration error.
  • Open the trace in the Microsoft Network Monitor (Netmon) application.
  • Open the Find Frame dialog box (CTRL-F) and look for the USBPort.USBPORT_ETW_EVENT_DEVICE_INITIALIZE event
  • Expand the fid_USBPORT_DeviceDescriptor field in the Frame Details area and see the value of bcdUSB
  • If the bcdUSB value is greater than 0x200, reopen the Find Frame dialog and search for USBPort.USBPORT_ETW_EVENT_COMPLETE_URB_FUNCTION_CONTROL_TRANSFER_EX.ControlTransfer.Urb.SetupPacket.Value_DescriptorType == 0xf. The search returns the completion of the control transfer for the BOS descriptor of type 0x0F.
  • Expand the ControlTransfer field in the Frame Details area and look at the value URB_Hdr_Status
  • If the value fid_URB_Hdr_Status is anything other than a success, the device could not return a BOS descriptor even if it reports a version higher than 0x200.

Check Hardware Device

With this method, you have to check the hardware device that clings to error 43. Let’s take the video card as an example. Here’s how to proceed:

  • Check the graphics card on your desktop tower or laptop. Make sure it is properly seated in the slot.
  • Make sure the hardware is clean. If the GPU fan is covered in dust, clean it with a small brush or cotton swab.
  • Make sure the GPU has sufficient power.

If there is a problem with the USB device, also make sure the USB connector or port is not oxidized. You can try another USB port or slot and try plugging the device into the USB port on the back of the PC when using a desktop.

Disconnect all Peripherals and Restart the Computer.

Rebooting your computer or laptop may fix this error faster than you think. But here’s the catch: because error 43 affects your USB connection, you must first unplug all devices connected to your device.

Then restart your computer and reconnect the devices one by one.

Driver Update

Update-Drivers

Another solution to correct the error is to check and update the driver. The reason for this is that the available driver may not be up to date. Therefore, installing the latest driver will most likely solve the problem.

The steps for updating the driver are as follows:

  • Go to Device Manager.
  • Right-click the driver you want to update.
  • Click Update Driver Software.
  • Finally, click Automatically check for driver software updates.
  • Additional Tip: If the current driver is up-to-date, be sure to uninstall it first and then reinstall it.
