- The tool will then repair your computer.
The RunDLL error “There was a problem starting ~. The specified module could not be found” occurs mainly when Windows users try to open a hard drive or external hard drive. However, for some users, the error only occurs when they try to open a shortcut that points to an executable file stored on that drive.
What is a Rundll File?
Rundll.exe files are system processes that are directly linked to your Windows operating system. Rundll and its later versions, called Rundll 32, are part of a vast network of code and data shared by many programs on your computer. They help your operating system achieve speed and memory efficiency by reusing the same code or files when running many different program functions.
A PC works in mysterious ways, and error can be the result of many possibilities. One of the most common is:
- Malware/virus attack
- Damaged Windows registry files
- Junk file on a USB stick
- Damaged system files
- Problem with the USB key
Delete Autorun.inf
Delete all autorun.inf files from all drives (from Windows or, if you want to be more secure, use a Linux boot CD).
Open the registry and go to the following keys and delete the keys that you know you did not install
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
Run CHKDSK
Another potential culprit that could cause this problem is data corruption on your hard drive. If this is the main cause of the problem, you can probably solve it by using the CHKDSK utility.
December 2024 Update:
You can now prevent PC problems by using this tool, such as protecting you against file loss and malware. Additionally, it is a great way to optimize your computer for maximum performance. The program fixes common errors that might occur on Windows systems with ease - no need for hours of troubleshooting when you have the perfect solution at your fingertips:
- Step 1 : Download PC Repair & Optimizer Tool (Windows 10, 8, 7, XP, Vista – Microsoft Gold Certified).
- Step 2 : Click “Start Scan” to find Windows registry issues that could be causing PC problems.
- Step 3 : Click “Repair All” to fix all issues.
Some users with whom we are also dealing with the same problem have reported that the “There was a problem in the first place ~. The specified module could not be found” no longer appears when they access their driver after running an automatic CHKDSK scan with the “Scan for bad sectors and try to recover them” checkbox checked.
Running a Malware Scan
If none of the above methods helped you solve the problem, it is also possible that the problem is caused by an ongoing security infection. If you have not already done so, we strongly recommend that you perform a thorough scan with a competent AV program.
If you already pay for a premium AV subscription, use it to scan for malware that might still be on your computer.
However, if you are looking for a competent AV suite capable of identifying and removing residual files that might still cause problems, you should consider using malware bytes.
