Diskpart, a Windows integrated tool, can help you create, delete or format partitions on your hard disk. However, you may encounter the error – no usable free space could be found using Diskpart to create a primary partition on a USB stick or SD card that already has one or more partitions.

“No usable free extent could be found. It may be that there is insufficient free space to create a partition at the specified size and offset. Specify different size and offset values or don’t specify either to create the maximum sized partition. It may be that the disk is partitioned using the MBR disk partitioning format and the disk contains either 4 primary partitions, (no more partitions may be created), or 3 primary partitions and one extended partition, (only logical drives may be created)”.

What are the reasons for this error?

There may be several reasons for this lack of space, and this section lists the most common ones:

  1. Limiting advanced partition and disk management tools.
  2. Once disk management was opened, other partition management software changed the size of the disk. Disk management does not update the current status of the partition and therefore does not display the actual volume size.
  3. You reduce a volume beyond the point where some real estate files are located.
  4. In fact, the volume you want to shrink has no more space and does not have enough free space to perform the necessary operations.

Run Diskpart

The hard disk most likely needs to be cleaned. Use the “diskpart” program on the command line to easily clean the entire device.

From Run: diskpart

1. List reader

Do you pay attention to the hard disk you want to clean?

2. Select the hard disk number

Replace # with the disc you are 100% sure you want to clean.

3. Clean
4. Create partition primary
5. Select partition 1
6. Active
7. Format quick fs=fat32
8. Assign
9. Exit

Uninstall the device driver from the device manager (for USB sticks).

If you use a USB stick, it is likely that Windows cannot interact properly with it due to a driver problem, or that Windows did not recognize the device, which is most likely the case with a USB stick. To solve this problem, proceed as follows:

  1. Right-click the My Computer shortcut on the desktop and click Properties.
  2. Once the window is open, click on the Device Manager on the right.
  3. Expand the category’Universal Serial Bus Controller’ and search for your USB stick.
  4. Then right-click on it and select Properties. In the Properties window, go to the Driver tab and click the Uninstall Device button.
  5. Finally, disconnect and reconnect your USB stick.
