The File Replication Service (FRS) is a multi-threaded, multi-master replication engine that replaces the LMREPL service in Microsoft Windows NT 3.x and 4.0. Microsoft Windows 2000 domain controllers and servers use FRS to replicate system policies and login scripts for Windows 2000 and lower-level clients.

FRS can also replicate content between Windows 2000 servers that host the same fault-tolerant DFS roots or replicas of child nodes.

This article describes the troubleshooting steps for use on Windows 2000 domain controllers that do not have Netlogon and sysvol shares.

Netlogon and sysvol failures typically occur on replica domain controllers in an existing domain, but they can also occur on the first domain controller in a new domain. The following steps focus more on the replication domain controller scenario, but can be applied to the first domain controller in the domain ignoring the replication-specific steps.

Verification

You must first determine which folder contains the last contents or the folder with the previously successfully executed script.

Performing a non-authoritative synchronization

  • Download and install the ADSIEDIT.msc tool
  • In the ADSIEDIT.MSC tool, change the following value and Distinguished Name (DN) attribute on each of the domain controllers you want to make non-authoritative
  • Subscription CN=SYSVOL
  • CN=Domain system volume
  • CN=DFSR-LocalSettings
  • CN=
  • OR=Domain Controller
  • DC=
  • msDFSR-Enabled=FALSE

Apply Active Directory replication across the entire domain.

  • Run the following command from a prompt on the same servers that you designated as unauthorized:
  • DFSRDIAG POLLAD
  • In the DFSR event log, you see event ID 4114, which indicates that SYSVOL is no longer being replicated.
  • Set to the same DN from step 1 :
  • msDFSR share=TRUE

Apply Active Directory replication across the entire domain.

Run the following command from a prompt on the same servers that you designated as unauthorized:

  • DFSRDIAG POLLAD
  • You see event IDs 4614 and 4604 in the DFSR event log, which indicate that SYSVOL has been initialized. This domain controller has now performed a “D2” on the SYSVOL.
