Origin is a digital distribution platform developed by Electronic Arts for purchasing and playing video games. The platform’s software client is available for PC and mobile platforms. If you are trying to update a game in Windows 10 using the Origin client and find that the folder does not contain an error message, this article may interest you. In this article we will identify some known potential causes that could cause the bug and then suggest possible solutions that you can try to fix.
This problem can occur if you have any of the following scenarios on your computer.
- You do not have access rights to the file or its location.
- The file is in a place that is currently inaccessible, for example. For example, in a network folder or on an external drive that is not currently connected to your PC.
- The file has been moved or deleted.
- File or shortcut is damaged.
- Windows can lock a file.
- It is possible that your antivirus is blocking the file.
Run Origin as administrator
Recent Windows updates or original updates may have changed access rights to the Origin executable file and may not have access to all folders that were available before the last update. So you can try running Origin as an administrator and see if it helps.
- Find the original executable file on your computer. If it is a shortcut on your desktop, just right-click the shortcut and select “Properties” from the context menu. Otherwise, you need to find the installation folder on your computer. If you changed the default folder during the installation, you will need to access it.
- Browse to Compatibility in the Properties window.
- In the “Settings” section, select the “Run this program as administrator” checkbox.
- Click Apply> OK to make the changes take effect.

Select the new folder
If the problem occurs with only one game on your computer, you may need to manually select the folder where the game is installed. Rather, this is a workaround, but the problem should no longer arise in the game you are trying to update. Be sure to do the following steps to try this method.
- Open the Origin client by double-clicking its icon on your desktop. If you don’t have a shortcut on your desktop, click on the Start menu or on the Search / Hunt button in the lower left corner of the screen and type “Home”. Left-click on the first result to open it.
- After opening the Origin client, click “Games” in the menu at the top of the window to open the list of games. You can also click “My Games Library” in the left menu of the main screen.
- Find the problem game in the list of installed games, click its icon with the right mouse button and choose “Update game” in the appeared context menu.
- If you receive an error message “There is no folder”, click “Select a new folder”. Go to the folder where the game is installed and select it. The update should work fine, and the problem is solved!
Reset the Origin game library to default settings
Perform the following steps to reset the Origin game library to its default settings.
- Double-click the Origin icon on your desktop to launch the Origin client.
- On the main Origin client screen, click the arrow icon in the lower left corner of the window next to your username.
- On the menu, select Application Settings.
- On the Settings screen, click the Install and Register tab.
- In the “On Your Computer” section, click “Restore Factory Defaults” next to the “Game Library Location” option and confirm any requests that may appear.
- Restart the Origin games update.
Give sufficient permissions
If the methods described above did not help in your scenario, consider providing sufficient permissions for the game installation folder. The game can be installed in an inaccessible folder without the necessary permissions. This method should solve the problem “The folder does not exist” on your computer.
