Data ‘roaming’ involves connecting your phone to a network that does not belong to your mobile operator so that you can continue to receive calls and use data.
And while this is not a problem when you travel within your own country, it can happen abroad depending on your plan.
To avoid being charged exorbitantly by your mobile operator, you should disable data roaming when you are abroad.
For iPhone users, this can be done in four easy steps. Here’s how it works.
To enable or disable data roaming on your iPhone
- Tap “Settings” on the Home screen of your iPhone and tap “General” on the Settings screen.
- Select “Network” to load roaming settings.
- Tap the “Data Roaming” button to turn off data roaming while travelling to avoid charges for services such as web browsing and picture messaging.
- Tap the “Voice Roaming” button to disable voice roaming. Turn off voice roaming.
- Touch the Home button to access the Home screen.
November 2024 Update:
You can now prevent PC problems by using this tool, such as protecting you against file loss and malware. Additionally, it is a great way to optimize your computer for maximum performance. The program fixes common errors that might occur on Windows systems with ease - no need for hours of troubleshooting when you have the perfect solution at your fingertips:
- Step 1 : Download PC Repair & Optimizer Tool (Windows 10, 8, 7, XP, Vista – Microsoft Gold Certified).
- Step 2 : Click “Start Scan” to find Windows registry issues that could be causing PC problems.
- Step 3 : Click “Repair All” to fix all issues.
When data roaming is turned off, you can use applications such as WhatsApp, Google Hangouts and Skype over a Wi-Fi connection to keep in touch with family and friends.
Please note that turning off data roaming does not disable roaming on your phone. This means that you’ll still be able to receive calls and text messages when you’re abroad, but you won’t be able to use data roaming. If you want to completely deactivate roaming, you will need to ask your network operator to do so.
Deactivating data roaming can also be useful if you are near a border. It is possible that a phone tower in a foreign country may have a stronger signal than the nearest one in your country. This could cause you to pay data roaming charges even if you have never left the country. Turning off data roaming prevents this possibility because your phone has been instructed not to use foreign data networks.
