Firefox was one of the first major browsers to offer a dedicated dark mode, and the option is refreshingly simple to activate, whether you use Windows, MacOS, iOS or Android.
The default theme is a default light theme that respects the settings of your Windows theme. For example, if you enable colored title bars on Windows 10, Firefox will use colored title bars with the default theme.
The Dark theme is the dark mode of Firefox. Everything in Firefox – including the title bar, toolbars, and menus – is black or dark gray with the dark theme.
The light theme uses lighter shades of gray. When you enable this theme, Firefox uses a light gray title bar and other elements, even if you have colored title bars enabled in Windows.

Enabling Firefox dark mode on the desktop
To activate the dark mode of Firefox under Windows, MacOS or Linux, open the main menu, click on “Customize” and select “Dark” from the “Themes” drop-down menu at the bottom of the page.
Dark mode through add-ons
Firefox browsers that do not have the dark mode pre-installed may require additions to the browser developer’s site. This option is also useful if the built-in dark mode does not fully meet the required level of customization. Additional and advanced themes may therefore be a desirable dark mode. It is quite simple and can be done in a few steps.
- Restart the Firefox browser from its source, depending on where it was saved during installation.
- This time, after clicking on the three-line icon in the upper right corner, go to the “Add-ons” section of the settings menu. You can also start directly with a simple combination of Ctrl + Shift + A.
- A pop-up window will display the options available for the add-ons, select the brush icon that is intended for the add-ons for customization.
- The browser should start on its source page, where you can search for new versions of the dark mode available for the device.
- Once configured, it can now be activated as the normal or pre-installed dark theme.
Enabling Firefox Dark Mode on iOS and Android
If you are using Firefox for iOS, open the menu and press “Night Mode” to switch to the darker color palette.
Firefox for Android does not yet offer a dark mode, but this will change very soon. The Firefox Preview, which is currently available for testing, will replace the existing application in the coming months. By default, it will match the theme of your device, but it can also be manually set to light or dark.
To access the options, simply open the menu, press “Theme” and select one of the three options.
If you prefer to keep the existing Firefox application for Android, you can visit http://addons.mozilla.org and download a dark theme from a third party vendor.
There are also Firefox extensions that force dark mode on websites that do not currently support it (Dark Reader is one of the most popular).
Conclusion
The dark mode or dark theme is very useful for users who surf the web at night or watch videos/films in web browsers. If you like to surf the web at night or have your PC in a dimly lit room, you should consider turning on dark mode on your Firefox to avoid eye strain.
