Some Firefox users have noticed that the browser connects to detectportal.firefox.com. Here’s why and how you can prevent this behavior.

Connecting to detectportal.firefox.com is one of the first connections that Firefox makes automatically.

Captive Portal

Detectportal.firefox.com is used to detect captive portals in public wifi networks in order to redirect you to their login screen so that you do not only get errors when loading pages in Firefox (set network.captive-portal-service. enabled to false in about:config to disable this feature). shavar.services.mozilla.com is used to update the list of trackers that are blocked when tracking protection is enabled. secure.fanboy.co.nz is used by your blocking addon to update its filter lists.

Disabling the Firefox Captive Portal and Connection into detectportal.firefox.com

There’s no control box for that, so…

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button that says “Warning”.

(2) In the search field above the list, type or paste the captive text and pause while the list is filtered.

(3) Double-click network.captive-portal-service.enabled to change the value from true to false.

If you are in a managed environment that uses, for example, an auto-configuration file, you can use it to change the default setting:

user_pref("network.captive-portal-service.enabled", false);

True is the default value, which means that the connection to detectportal.firefox.com is established each time Firefox is started. In addition, some users report that the Firefox VPN does not work properly when network.captive-portal-service.enabled is set to false. If you are a Firefox VPN service user, please write us a comment if changing the option affects the feature.

In About:Config, you can also set Update captivedetect.canonicalURL to an empty string. You can also add the domain detectportal.firefox.com to your host file, which points to 127.0.0.1 This will block the connection.

Finally, there are other domains that you can add to your host file. They are also used for internal Firefox needs, such as statistics collection and telemetry. They are not required for regular browsing tasks and to receive browser updates. Here is the list:

  • ostats.mozilla.com
  • sostats.mozilla.com
  • metrics.mozilla.com
  • hardware.metrics.mozilla.com
  • incoming.telemetry.mozilla.org
  • crash-stats.mozilla.com
  • experiments.mozilla.org
  • getpocket.cdn.mozilla.net
  • qsurvey.mozilla.com
  • telemetry.mozilla.org
  • telemetry experiment.cdn.mozilla.net
