One of the easiest ways to prevent email tracking software from working is to block the display of default images. You can enable this setting in almost all email services, but be aware that loading images into your email requires an additional click.

How to turn off loading images in Gmail

In Gmail, you have the option of always letting images of emails load or letting the system ask you first.

Always display images:

  • Sign in to your Gmail account on your computer.
  • Click on the settings wheel in the upper right corner.
  • Select Settings.
  • In the Images section, click the Always show external images button.
  • At the bottom of the screen, click ‘Save Changes’.

To turn off loading images into the Gmail Mobile App

In the Gmail Android or iOS application, open the hamburger menu ( ) and scroll down to Settings. Select the account you want to manage, then scroll down and touch Pictures. Again, “Always show external images” is the default option. Select “Ask before viewing external images” to block them, and you will see a “Show images” option that will advance when opening emails on your mobile device. If you select this option, the sender will be listed in the white list.
