With the continuous development of computer technology, FAT32 is not able to meet the needs of computer users. For example, game developers who want to create more spectacular graphics effects produce ever larger game programs, resulting in memory failures for unknown reasons. Many actors think that it is their problem with the configuration of the hardware that leads to this dilemma. However, the possibility that the partition’s file system does not support files of this size may also be the reason.

In fact, individual files larger than 4GB cannot be stored on the FAT32 partition, and the user must convert FAT32 to NTFS to successfully store these files, as NTFS supports a maximum file size of 2TB.

Why do you need to convert FAT to NTFS?

Before converting FAT to NTFS, you may want to know why it is necessary to convert the file system of storage devices.

In fact, computer users want to convert FAT (FAT12/FAT16/FAT32) to an NTFS file system because NTFS is more powerful and offers advanced features in terms of performance, security and reliability than FAT.

See the next NTFS, FAT32, FAT16 and FAT12 comparisons for more information:

In general, NTFS has several improvements over FAT, such as better metadata support, the use of advanced data structures to improve disk performance, reliability and utilization, and additional improvements such as security access control lists and file system logs.

Advantages of NTFS

  • Basically, NTFS has the following advantages over FAT32.
  • Support for larger partitions and file sizes.
  • More efficient management of disk space.
  • Supports compression of partitions, folders and files.
  • A judicious distribution of system sources improves system security.
  • Authorizations to access shared sources, folders and files provide increased security.

Converting a FAT or FAT32 drive to NTFS

When you convert a player by following these steps, the files on the player are preserved. We also recommend that you save all files to the hard disk.

  1. Locate the letter of the drive you want to convert. Open the File Explorer and search for the drive in the left pane under “This PC” or “Computer”.
  2. Press the Windows Logo + R key to open the Run dialog box.
  3. Type cmd to open the Command Prompt window.
  4. At the command prompt, type convert drive : /fs:ntfs
  5. For example, if the drive letter to be converted is e, you must type convert e : /fs:ntfs

Convert the file system directly

If you already have a ton of files on the disk and you don’t have the free space to move them, you can convert the file system directly from FAT32 to NTFS. Simply open a command prompt for the administrator mode by right-clicking and choosing Run as administrator, then type convert / ? to display the syntax of the conversion command.

In our example, the letter of the reader is G : the command we would use would be this one:

convert G : /FS:NTFS

The conversion process can take some time, especially if you have a very large hard drive.

CONCLUSION

Unfortunately, there is no way to convert from NTFS to FAT32 – if you want to come back, you have to reformat the player completely. However, this tip is still very pleasant because it saves you about half the time by reformatting your hard disk. As with all these things, make sure you make a backup first!
