What is a PST file?
PST is the abbreviation for Personal Storage Folder. A PST file is a personal folder file in MS Outlook. This is Outlook’s default storage limit of 2 GB. It is used to store copies of emails, calendars, contacts, notes and other items.

This manual is about backing up and restoring your Outlook data. It describes different methods and explains which method is best for which scenario.
Restore an item that is no longer in your Deleted Items folder.
People delete their emails so as not to increase the size of their Outlook Express inbox, later they discover that they have deleted some important emails for which they do not have a backup. If you are in this situation, don’t worry, there is a way to recover deleted Outlook Express emails.
The.dbx and.mbx files are used by Outlook Express to store the files. Each Outlook Express mailbox has its own.dbx file extension (such as inbox.dbx, drafts.dbx, etc.), and all emails from a particular mailbox are stored in that single file. Together, they are stored in a folder called the Store folder, located in the Documents and Settings folder.
The biggest threat to the security of all email storage files is data loss. The general loss of emails can be due to viruses, system formats and accidental deletion of emails.
If you accidentally delete an email in Outlook Express, immediately exit Outlook Express and do NOT try to compress the email folders.
When emails are deleted, they are not deleted from the mailbox file (.dbx), but remain in the dbx file as free space. Outlook Express tries to physically delete these deleted emails from time to time using the Compact feature. Compact option, deletes deleted files, which in turn speeds up Outlook Express performance, but deleted emails are deleted so that they are unrecoverable.
If you do not find an item in the Deleted Items folder, the next search location is the Recoverable Items folder. It is a hidden folder, and it is where the items are moved when you do one of the following things:
- Delete an item from the Deleted Items folder.
- Empty the Deleted Items folder.
- Permanently delete an item from the Inbox or other folder by selecting it and pressing Shift+Delete.
- In Outlook, go to your list of email folders, then click Deleted Items.
- From the Home menu, select Restore deleted server items.
- Select the item or items you want to restore, click Restore Selected Items, and then click OK.
Where do the recovered items go? When you restore items in the Recoverable Items folder, they are moved to the Deleted Items folder. So, after restoring an item, you can find it in your Deleted Items folder and then move it to another folder.
