Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Resources

This section contains links to information about network technologies documented in the Windows Server TechCenter library, Windows Server® collection 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Networking Collection.

The Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 network collection. Learn how to deploy a Foundation network and related technologies with the Foundation Network Guides collection, available in HTML format from the Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2

technical libraries.

Foundation Network Guides

The following instructions are available in the collection Foundation Network Guides :

  • Windows Server 2008 Foundation Network Guide : Learn how to deploy a core network using Active Directory Domain Services, Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) and other network technologies.
  • Server Certificate Deployment: Learn how to automatically register server certificates for Network Access Protection (NPS) and Routing and Remote Access-based Virtual Private Network (VPN) servers using Active Directory Certificate Services (AD CS) and Group Policy.
  • Providing computer and user certificates: Learn how to deploy client and user computer certificates using Active Directory Certificate Services (AD CS). If you are using the extensible authentication protocol (EAP) – Transport Level Security (TLS) or Protected EAP (PEAP) – TLS, certificates are required to authenticate servers, clients and users for network connection attempts on network access servers such as 802.1X authentication switches and wireless access points, virtual private network servers (VPN) and computers running Windows Server 2008 and Terminal Services Gateway (TS Gateway) or Windows Server 2008 R2 and Remote Desktop Gateway.
  • Using 802.1X Authenticated Wired Access with PEAP-MS-CHAP v2 Learn how to provide 802.1X authenticated wired access using Protected Extensible Authentication Protocol-Microsoft Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol Version 2 (PEAP-MS-CHAP v2) for password authentication.
  • Using 802.1X Authenticated Wireless Access with PEAP-MS-CHAP v2: Learn how to provide 802.1X Authenticated Wireless Access using Protected Protocol-Microsoft Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol Version 2 (PEAP-MS-CHAP v2).
  • Providing Group Policies Using Member Groups: This guide to the Foundation Network Guide contains instructions for deploying Group Policy Objects (GPOs) on computers connected to the domain, regardless of the hierarchy of organizational units in the domain. Membership in a single group of members results in the correct GPO being applied to the computer, with filters ensuring that a GPO for one version of Windows is not unintentionally applied to another version.

All Foundation Network Guides are available for download. oad in the Microsoft download center.

Information about new network features of Windows Server 2008 R2

Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 operating systems contain network extensions that make it easier for users to stay connected regardless of their location or network type. These enhancements enable IT professionals to meet their business needs in a secure, reliable and flexible manner.

For information on new network features for Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7, see What’s New in Networking, in the Windows Server TechCenter Library. The following new features are covered:

  • DirectAccess : It allows access to an enterprise network without the additional step of establishing a VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection.
  • VPN Reconnect: It automatically reconnects to the VPN once the Internet connection is reconnected so that users do not have to re-enter their credentials and re-establish the VPN connection.
  • BranchCache: Allows you to cache updated content from file servers and Web servers in a wide area network (WAN) on computers in a local branch office, increase application response times and reduce WAN traffic.
  • Quality of service (QoS) based on URL : It allows you to assign a priority level to traffic based on the URL from which the traffic originates.
  • Support for mobile broadband devices: This is a driver-based model for devices used to access a mobile broadband network.
