Disabling Third Party Anti-virus
It turns out that this problem can also occur due to an overprotective AV suite that interferes in one way or another with the Windows Update component. In this case, communication with the Microsoft server will be interrupted and some updates will fail.
According to the users concerned, there are several third party suites known to cause this problem (Avast, McAfee, Sophos and Comodo). If you are using a third-party scanner that you suspect is responsible for the update problem, you should be able to resolve the problem by either disabling real-time protection of your AV site or completely uninstalling the third-party suite.
First, disable real-time protection and check if the problem persists. Note that this procedure varies depending on the security client you are using. In most cases, however, you can do this directly from the system tray icon. To do this, simply right-click on the Security Suite system tray icon and search for the option that disables real-time protection.
Once you have successfully disabled real-time protection, try reinstalling the Windows update and see if you can do so without error code 8020002E.
