Windows 10 users reported another error in the October 2018 update (version 1809) that delayed the shutdown. Microsoft said that the bug in the implementation of the USB Type-C Connector System Software Interface (UCSI) software was version 1809. The company has discovered that the problem has now been fixed by the latest version of Windows 10 1903.

What is the cause of this error?

An error in the implementation of the USB Type-C Connector System Software Interface (UCSI) software under Windows 10, version 1809, can cause a 60 second delay in the system sleep or shutdown process if the power is turned off while the UCSI software is busy with a new connection or disconnection operation on a USB Type-C port. Other than the extra minute required to put the USB Type-C on standby or off in these circumstances, this error does not affect the normal operation of the USB Type-C on your machine. The system and USB type C ports should continue to operate properly after the next system boot or reboot.

This can happen when devices, docking stations or chargers are plugged in or out during power changes, Microsoft explains.

Apart from the slow stop, the feature should not affect the system and operation of the USB Type C, and everything should continue to operate normally after a restart.

How to fix this bug

Microsoft has confirmed the existence of the bug, but has not yet released an update or patch to fix it. In the meantime, you have a simple solution to speed up the slow shutdown of your system: Unplug your USB type C devices before turning off or hibernating your PC.

If you are not sure what a type C USB key is, you should look for a cable that has at least one port that looks like this:

Most USB type C devices are simply charged via the USB port and can be easily disconnected. Others – such as Android devices or external drives – can transfer data or send video/audio to and from your PC, so make sure they do not do anything important before disconnecting. Simple things, but easy to forget when you need to shut down your system quickly for any reason. (Otherwise, you should be ready to wait 60 seconds longer.)

Run Power Troubleshooter

First, perform the built-in electrical troubleshooting by following these steps, then let Windows check and solve the problem to prevent the windows from shutting down properly.

  1. Press Windows + I to open the settings.
  2. Click on Update and Security, then on Troubleshooting.
  3. Scroll down in the center pane and select Power.
  4. Perform a power supply troubleshooting.

Run System Maintenance

  1. Enter Maintenance in the Windows search bar and click on Security and Maintenance.
  2. Expand the Maintenance section and click on Start Maintenance.
  3. Perform system maintenance and restart the system when the process is complete.
