What does “No bootable media found” in VirtualBox mean?

Several users have FATAL: No bootable media found! System shutdown’ when you try to start a new virtual machine in Virtualbox. This problem does not only apply to Windows, as it is also the case under Linux and even on Mac computers.

As you know, this error is due to one of the following causes:

Cause 1: The partition table is corrupted.

The most common cause of this error is a corrupted partition table. It is located in the MBR (Master Boot Record) of the boot sector, which contains information on how logical partitions containing file systems are organized on this media. The most common cause of this error is a defective hard disk or a writing error on the hard disk.

Cause 2: The partition table is empty

Another possible cause of this error is a partition table that contains no bootable entries. This may be due to errors in the manual configuration of the partition table or read/write errors on the hard disk.

To solve this problem, follow these steps:

1) Select your VM instance. Go to Settings->Space

2) Under the memory tree, select the default image or “Empty” (as applicable).

3) Click on the CD image under the attribute frame and select “Select a virtual CD/DVD disc”.

4) Browse and select the image file (iso or other format) in the system.

5) Select OK.

CONCLUSION

Our VM now finds the required bootable media, i.e. the ISO file of the guest operating system.

Thank you for reading this article. I hope you have successfully started your new VM with the desired guest operating system and Oracle VM VirtualBox. If you have a suggestion or question, let me know in the comments box.
