Some Microsoft Outlook users report that they see the error “The program that created this object is Outlook” when they try to open online attachments or any type of archived item. Most of the users concerned report that the problem is not caused by an antivirus – the problem occurs whether or not a security suite is active. The error is confirmed on Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10. The most common reports are Office 2010, Office 2013 and Office 2017.

When you open an attachment in an email, contact or task formatted as rich text, you receive the following error:

The program used to create this object is Outlook. That program is either not installed on your computer or it is not responding. To edit this object, install Outlook or ensure that any dialog boxes in Outlook are closed.

Microsoft detected this Outlook problem and suggested that users use the following solutions until the problem was solved.

1. forward the email to yourself, then open the attachments to the forwarded email;
2. change the email format to HTML or text format;
3. Save the attachments to your computer using one of the following methods, then open them in the saved location:
– Drag and drop attachments on your desktop;
– Go to File -> Save attachments;
– Copy and paste the attachment onto your computer.

Uninstalling some Outlook updates

 

This has been documented by Microsoft as a known problem and the problem is due to a recently installed patch, KB3203467 (Security Update for Outlook 2010 June 13 2017).

Uninstall the June update for your Outlook version. Please note that this is a security update, so uninstalling it is only recommended if you are aware of the risks and cannot use the other solutions.

Upgrading Windows to the latest version

If the first method does not allow you to update your version of the Outlook client and resolve the error “The program that created this object is Outlook”, you can configure the WU (Windows Update) component to force your operating system to update Outlook with the latest version.

Several affected users reported that the problem did not recur after allowing Windows Update to install each pending update.
