Photoshop CS6, the latest addition to Adobe Creative Suite, includes powerful photo and graphics editing tools. However, this software is not without frustration, and many users of online forums complain about bugs that prevent the saving or opening of files. These bugs have never been officially fixed by Adobe, but a few tips might help you fix them so you can reopen your files.

Enable OpenGL display

Editing – Settings – Performance. Clear the Enable [ ] OpenGL display check box. Close Photoshop and restart it.

Don’t forget to reactivate OpenGL after updating your display driver, otherwise you don’t have the specific features of OpenGL.

Reset PS settings

When you run Photoshop, a configuration file is created with all the settings and options that the program needs to work properly. If this file is corrupted or damaged, it may prevent Photoshop from opening your files correctly. Photoshop checks this file every time you open the program, and if it doesn’t find any, it creates a new file in the system folder. To reset your settings, locate the file and delete it or move it to another location. If Photoshop does not find this file the next time it is launched, it will create a new clean file.

This may seem like an oversimplified solution, but many users have been able to solve this problem by ensuring that Photoshop is open with administrator rights. In most cases, this is confirmed for users under Windows 7, Windows 8 / 8.1, or even Windows Vista.

It turns out that missing administrator privileges can also be responsible for Photoshop’s refusal to open or create new projects. Here is a quick guide to open Photoshop with administrator privileges and force the software to open with administrator privileges every time:

  1. First, make sure Photoshop is completely closed – Check your taskbar icon to make sure Photoshop or Creative Cloud is not running in the background.
  2. Then right-click on the executable Photoshop file (the one you use to start the program) and click Run as administrator. When prompted in the User Account Control (UAC) window, click Yes to allow administrator access.
  3. Once Photoshop is open, use it normally and check if the problem persists. If this is not the case, follow the following steps to make the changes permanent.
  4. Close Photoshop completely.
  5. Right-click the executable Photoshop file again and select Properties from the context menu.
  6. If you are in the Photoshop Properties window, select the Compatibility tab, go to the Settings section and check the box associated with Run this program as administrator.
  7. Click Apply and reopen Photoshop to see if the correction was effective.

Changing the exchange drive (scratch disk)

As unlikely as it may seem, several concerned users have confirmed that they can solve this problem by changing the default drive to another drive (or directory). Although there is no official explanation as to the effectiveness of this procedure, it is likely that this will result in the removal of any damage in the exchange file as it must be recreated.
