If you are part of a work environment, it is not uncommon to migrate from one server to another every few years. This is usually done by the IT department, and the migration will include all the parameter changes you can expect.
For example, folder redirection should also be mentioned, and in a large organization this can only be done effectively through group policies.
However, some users have reported that their folder redirects them to an old location.
Folder Redirection
Folder redirection is configured by applying a group policy. Windows Server 2008 has several settings that allow you to redirect user folders that are normally in your profile to server-based folders. These settings are included in the “User Settings”, “Administrative Templates”, “System”, and “Folder Redirection” section of the group policy. You must be on the domain controller to enable these settings.
December 2024 Update:
You can now prevent PC problems by using this tool, such as protecting you against file loss and malware. Additionally, it is a great way to optimize your computer for maximum performance. The program fixes common errors that might occur on Windows systems with ease - no need for hours of troubleshooting when you have the perfect solution at your fingertips:
- Step 1 : Download PC Repair & Optimizer Tool (Windows 10, 8, 7, XP, Vista – Microsoft Gold Certified).
- Step 2 : Click “Start Scan” to find Windows registry issues that could be causing PC problems.
- Step 3 : Click “Repair All” to fix all issues.
The common folders that can be redirected are as follows:
- My Documents
- Favourites
- Start menu
- Office
- Demand data
These files are normally included in your profile. They can become very large and can take a long time to load when you log in. When you redirect them, you place a pointer in your profile that points to the folder that contains this information. The pointer is not very large and does not change, so your profile will remain smaller.
How to Fix Folder Redirection Does Not Update to a New Server
You must force an update by following these additional steps:
- Create or modify a GPO that applies to the computers on which the users affected by the folder forwarding policies log on.
- Edit the GPO.
- Under Computer Configuration, expand the Administrative Templates option.
- Under Administrative Templates, expand System.
- Under System, select Group Policy.
- Double-click the setting for handling folder forwarding policies.
- Select the Enabled option, and then select the second check box. (process even if the group policy objects have not changed).
- Exit the Group Policy Object Editor. Make sure that this new GPO applies to the accounts of computers for which users use folder forwarding.
- After applying this policy change, computers will be able to recognize the updated folder forwarding policy and take into account the changes that have been made to stop folder forwarding.
Note: Windows 10 does not come with a Group Policy Editor by default.
