Windows offers the possibility to display certain messages during startup and shutdown. These are called status messages Verbose and inform us of the processes or steps that the Windows operating system performs when it starts, stops, connects and disconnects. These detailed messages tell you what Windows is doing in the background while these operations are running.
You may have seen such messages when your Windows starts or turns off. These are detailed status messages.
Detailed status messages can be very useful when debugging or fixing certain Windows problems, including slow startup, shutdown, connection, or disconnect behavior. If your Windows does not shut down, detailed status messages can tell you exactly where and at what stage your Windows is.
There are regular messages that you will always see, even if the detailed messages are not enabled, like Apply your personal settings or Apply computer settings. However, if you enable detailed status messages, you will see additional status messages that will help you debug or troubleshoot.
Detailed messages that you can see during startup may include the following:
- Start Windows
- RPCSS starts
- Start Windows Update Service
- Accept Personal Settings
- Accept Computer Settings
- Please wait until the user profile is loaded
- Prepare Desktop
During the shutdown, you will probably see messages like :
- Exit Application
- Stop Group Policy Service
- Stop Windows Update
- Please wait for Group Policy Service
- Please wait for Windows Update Service
- Please wait for Windows Update Service
- Notify Services, that Windows turns off
- Wait for the end of machine group policies
- Define services
- Stop
- Windows is preparing to turn off the computer

Enable detailed or very detailed status messages via Group Policy

When you enable this setting, the system displays status messages that reflect each step of starting, stopping, connecting, and disconnecting the system. Note that this setting is ignored if Boot / Shutdown / Logon / Remove Logon / Logon / Remove Logoff Status Messages is enabled.
Under Windows 8/10
Under Windows 8/10, this setting has a new name Display very detailed status messages.
This policy setting requires the system to display very detailed status messages. This policy setting is intended for advanced users who need this information.
