Until recently, we used the IPv4 version, which provided us with a 32-bit address. But these available addresses will soon be out of stock. The new version of IP, i.e. IPv6, offers us 128-bit addressability, which means more addresses are available and would make the Internet more secure (better network security) than the previous version of IPv4, with better quality of service and other features such as mobility support, multicast support.

IPv6, the successor to the protocol currently used on the Internet, was developed in the late 1990s but has not yet been used worldwide. As IPv4 address space is exhausted, the industry cannot afford to wait much longer. Now or after the launch of World IPv6, i.e. as of June 6, 2012, many websites will permanently enable IPv6 connectivity to their websites.

Most Windows users don’t even notice the move. If you do not have IPv6 connectivity, you will continue the connection as before. If you have IPv6 connectivity, your connectivity to participating websites is automatically switched to IPv6. Test your IPv6 connectivity here.

If you have problems connecting to the Internet or certain websites, you can use these Microsoft Fix It’s to solve your Internet connection problems.

By default, Windows prefers IPv6 to IPv4, so if you have problems connecting to some websites with IPv6, you can configure your Windows to prefer IPv4 to IPv6 .

– The Prefer IPv4 instead of IPv6 Microsoft Fix it 50410 will configure your computer to use IP4 instead of IPv6.

– If you want to cancel it at any time, you can use the Prefer IPv6 option rather than IPv4 Microsoft Fix it 50441 to reset Windows to its default settings.

Enable or disable IPv6 and IPv4

If you want to disable IPv6 for any reason, you can disable it from the DisabledComponents registry value or the Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) component in the Network tab list of items for the Network Connections folder connection properties, i.e. Control PanelNetwork and InternetNetwork Connections. You can also uninstall, install or modify their properties.

Alternatively, you can use the following Microsoft patch to do the job for you. In KB929852 you will find lots of Fix Its that will allow you to do this:

    1. Disable IPv6
    2. Prefer IPv4 to IPv6
    3. Disable IPv6 on non-tunnel interfaces
    4. Disable IPv6 tunnel interfaces
    5. Disable IPv6 on non-tunnel interfaces (except loopback) and on IPv6 tunnel interfaces
    6. Enable IPv6 on non-tunnel interfaces
    7. Enable IPv6 on non-tunnel interfaces and on IPv6 tunnel interfaces.

UPDATE : The new search shows the correct way to disable IPv6 on Windows systems and avoid a 5 second boot time. Microsoft specified the correct value for the registry key DisabledComponents. See Correct method to disable IPv6 and avoid a 5 second start delay.

It is always a good idea to create a system restore point before making changes to your system.

I hope this article will help those who have connection problems. Learn more about the difference between IPv4 and IPv6
