Microsoft Edge’s move to the chrome rendering engine has made it a better browser in almost every area. It displays web sites without any problems, supports an extensive library of extensions, and is fast and responsive. To make things even better, it also has a dark mode feature.
Microsoft Edge Chromium’s dark mode goes beyond the dark theme in the non-chrome version of the browser. As long as websites support a darker color palette, they will also be displayed in dark mode. Let’s see how this feature can be enabled and used.
Enabling the Dark Theme for Microsoft Edge on the Desktop
- After installing Microsoft Edge, you can activate the dark mode or theme by clicking the Options button (three dots) in the upper right corner of the browser and clicking Settings.
- Then select Appearance in the left column. In the Customize Browser section, you can change the theme from light to dark from the drop-down menu.
- You can also set it to the system default, which will change the border between light and dark depending on your system configuration.

Automatically change the Microsoft Edge theme based on time
If you want to automatically enable or disable the dark and light themes according to your time zone, you can use a tool called Windows Auto Night Mode. You can have a dark theme at night when you use your computer in the dark, while you can use the light theme during the day.
You can set how long you want Windows to use a dark theme and a light theme. If you select the Microsoft Edge theme as the system, the theme changes when Windows’ automatic night mode changes the system theme. Make sure the software is running when you start your computer so that it can be updated automatically.
Microsoft should add its dark mode, which is part of the operating system, to the time factor. I’m sure many would like to have it.
Conclusion
The function works as announced in the latest version of Microsoft Edge Canary. Note that this is an experimental feature and may be removed from Edge before it reaches the stable version of the browser (which has not yet been officially released).
This setting allows Edge users who prefer dark themes to get rid of the majority of light theme pages by automatically converting them to darker theme pages.
