Desktop media, Desk Drive and DriveShortcut are three free programs that automatically create shortcuts to removable media when you connect USB, DVD, etc. to your Windows computer and delete the icon when you delete the media.

Desktop Media is a small Windows application that automatically adds player icons to your desktop. It detects USB drives, external hard drives, CD/DVD drives, network drives and even RAM drives and creates shortcuts. For removable media, the shortcut to your desktop is only created if it exists. You can see the office media here.

Desk Drive adds a desktop icon that automatically points to the disk. Remove the support and the shortcut will disappear. This tool is quietly located in the taskbar. The configuration is done in one click and you can choose the media types to monitor. Once you have inserted an external drive, a shortcut to the drive is automatically created on the desktop. You can then open the player at any time via the shortcut. For more information about Desk Drive, click here. Be careful, they will try to install a third party offer, so make sure you don’t accept it.

DriveShortcut returns to the tray area and automatically creates or deletes a removable drive or DVD icon from the desktop each time you connect an external hard drive to your computer. This icon is automatically deleted when the drive is removed – but under Windows 8.1, the icon was not automatically deleted after I removed the USB drive. It is available here.
