Windows 8/10 includes a new feature that allows you to program and run Automatic Maintenance on your computer. The task, when performed, performs tasks such as security updates and scans, Windows software updates, disk defragmentation, disk volume errors, system diagnostics, etc. and also includes enterprise-level network access protection scans and security standards for all workstations in the enterprise.
In Windows 7 and earlier versions, performance and energy efficiency are to some extent impaired, but in Windows 8, this maintenance activity is designed to run in the background in a hierarchical manner with limited user interaction and minimal impact on performance and energy efficiency.
Says MSDN :
Automatic maintenance automatically stops current maintenance activities when the user interacts with the computer. Maintenance activity continues when the system returns to standby mode.

Automatic Windows 10/8 maintenance runs daily and combines all background maintenance activities, such as updating Windows software, applications, supporting Action Center messages, performing maintenance tasks in the background, etc. without affecting performance and energy efficiency. It allows the user to control the planning and configuration of maintenance activities. However, the responsiveness of the operating system to users may be reduced if maintenance activities are performed while users are actively using the computer.
The process is called MSchedExe.exe.exe and is located in the System32 folder; to access automatic maintenance under Windows 8, open the Control Panel and navigate to the Action Center. Click here under Maintenance on the small arrow on the right. This indicates automatic maintenance. If you notice that it is not monitored, you can click Enable automatic maintenance messages.
This allows the action center to monitor automatic maintenance and display messages to you via the Action center icon in the taskbar.
If you want to disable these messages, you can also do so by unchecking Action Center > Change Action Center Settings > Disable Maintenance Messages.
By default, automatic maintenance runs in fully automatic mode, i.e. your PC is intelligently scanned at idle and scheduled times without user intervention. The whole task is performed silently, and you won’t notice anything.
If your computer is busy, it will run the next time your PC is not used.
When your computer is in power save mode, it restarts and maintenance activities are performed with all system resources to complete the task as quickly as possible. When the task is complete, the system returns to sleep mode. However, you must allow the Scheduled Maintenance option to wake my computer when it is connected at the scheduled time.
If you want to change the schedule for this automatic maintenance, click Change Maintenance Settings and you can set the time from the drop-down menu.
If, for any reason, you want to start the maintenance task immediately, you can do so by clicking the Perform maintenance button . This allows you to perform this task at unplanned times. This is called User Initiated Mode.
To complete the Maintenance work, simply move the mouse pointer. If this does not help, you can use the
