Add analysis with Windows Defender to the Windows 8 context menu

One thing that is missing in Windows Defender under Windows 8 is a right-click context menu that allows the user to scan any folder. We recently explained how to add Windows Defender features to the context menu Desktop, which would facilitate quick access to Windows Defender.

Some users have asked us how to add scanning with Windows Defender for a file and folder. Thanks to the advice of a guest commentator on TWC, we have developed this tutorial. Read on to learn how to add this option to the context menu of the folder.

Manual method

1 Press the Windows key + R combination, type Regedt32.exe in the Run dialog box and press Enter to open the registry editor.

2 Navigate to the next registry key :

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOToldershell

3 Create a subkey in the left pane, name it WindowsDefender.

4 Create two WORDS in the right part of the subkey created above and use the following data for them:

Icon – %Program Files%Windows DefenderEppManifest.dll

This adds the Windows Defender icon.

5 We must now assign a command. Create subkey Command under key WindowsDefender.

6 In the right part of the subkey created above, change the default DWORD value with the following command :

C:Program filesWindows DefenderMpCmdRun.exe -scan -scan -scan -scan type 3 -SignatureUpdate -File %1

7. It’s here. Now select any folder and right-click to get the Windows Defender scan option. It will scan and you will see a command prompt window for a few seconds. Any infection is reported through this prompt.
