Autorun is used to automatically start certain advanced multimedia programs or content when you insert a CD, DVD or other type of media into your computer. This is different from automatic playback, but the result is often the same: When the CD is inserted, it starts automatically with a specific program.
AutoPlay allows you to choose the program to use to start different types of media such as DVDs, CDs, etc. containing music, videos, photos, etc. For example, if you are trying to play a music CD for the first time, AutoPlay will ask you which media player to use if you have more than one installed on your computer. To learn more about AutoPlay under Windows, click here. Auto-run is built into the media types that use it and you cannot change it. When you try to play a CD that uses autorun, you will be prompted to select an action to play or skip the contents of the autorun. AutoPlay allows you to select an action and is the successor to AutoRun.
To prevent the spread of malware via the AutoRun mechanism, Microsoft has made an important change, starting with Windows 7, AutoPlay no longer supports AutoRun functionality for non-optical removable media. In other words, AutoPlay still works for CD/DVD, but not for USB drives.
AutoPlay on Windows 8/10
When you connect devices to your computer Windows 7 | 8, the AutoPlay function starts automatically and starts playing media such as music, images and videos. For example, the first time you try to play a music CD, AutoPlay asks which media player you want to use if you have more than one installed on your computer. Although good, some of you can disable this feature.

Disable auto playback on Windows 10/8/7.
1] Control Panel
Open the Control PanelAll Control PanelAutoPlay and adjust the options according to your settings.
2] Using Group Policy
Type gpedit.msc in the Run field, then press ENTER to open the Group Policy Editor. Under Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Click Auto Read Policies.
In the RHS Details area, double-click Disable Auto Playback to open the Properties field.
This policy setting allows you to disable the auto playback function. AutoPlay starts playback from a player when you insert media into the player. This will immediately launch the program installation file and music on the audio support. Before Windows XP SP2, Autoplay is disabled by default on removable drives such as the floppy disk drive (but not the CD-ROM drive) and network drives. Starting with Windows XP SP2, Autoplay is also enabled for removable drives, including Zip drives and some USB mass storage devices. If you enable this policy setting , AutoPlay is disabled on CD-ROM and removable media drives or on all drives. This policy setting disables automatic playback on other types of players. You cannot use this setting to enable auto playback on players where it is disabled by default. If you disable or do not configure this policy setting, AutoPlay is enabled.
