Windows offers the ability to compress files by supporting Zip functionality. Although this is a very useful feature if you are already using a third-party compression program, some of them can disable built-in Windows Zip support and associate the external Zip program with the Zip file format. In this article we see how to disable this ZIP feature built into Windows.
In Windows XP this solution worked. All you had to do was uninstall a DLL file. Open the Run field, type and press Enter :
08002B2Eregsvr32 /u %windir%system32zipfldr.dll
regsvr32%windir%system32zipfldr. dll
This may not work under Windows Vista and later because uninstallation of this particular DLL file is not supported in these later operating systems, such as Windows 7 and Windows 10/8. If you try, you will receive an error message.

To disable Zip support in Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 10/8, you must open regedit and delete the following two registry keys:
To disable file support zip, delete this key :
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID{E88DCCE0-B7B3-11d1-A9F0-00AA0060FA31}.
0060FA31
To disable file support cab, delete this key :
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID{0CD7A5C0-9F37-11CE-AE65-08002B2E1262}.
0060FA31
The Windows registry may not allow you to simply delete these keys. You may need to take possession of these registry keys. I suggest you use our RegOwnIt to do it easily.
If you have other zip file compression software or installed, you should disable this built-in zip support to save some resources.
Of course – first create a system restore point !
