What is Wi-Fi in Windows 10? What are the potential problems associated with this characteristic? This article answers these questions and also shows you how to disable Wi-Fi Sense in Windows 10 if you wish.

Wi-Fi Sense was first seen in Windows 8 phones. It has been ported to Windows 10 – both mobile and desktop versions. But with Wi-Fi Sense on the Windows 10 desktop, there are potential problems or should I call them threats?

Wi-Fi Sense under Windows 10

Wi-Fi Sense is a feature of Windows 10 that allows you to connect to your friends. This means that you and your friends can choose to share your Wi-Fi connections. According to Microsoft, friends are the people on your Facebook friends list, your Outlook contacts and Skype. By default, all 3 are preset.

When you turn it on under Windows 10, they can connect to your Wi-Fi without knowing your password. That means two things:

  1. Friends must be within range of shared Wi-Fi
  2. Password is sent encrypted to other computers, but can be hacked.

The password is also stored in the Microsoft database – in encrypted form so that no one can hack into it, says Microsoft.

But we all know what happened to LastPass and similar password stores. Hackers are everywhere and there is always the danger of hacking passwords.

There are two problems with Wi-Fi Sense on Windows 10. Maybe you want to share it with one or two family members or real offline friends you really trust. But by default, all members of your Facebook, Outlook and Skype contact lists can access Wi-Fi if they are within range. This is the default setting.

Second, although the password is sent encrypted to both your friend’s computer and Microsoft, there is a chance it is cracked. As far as the Microsoft database is concerned, cybercriminals will always try to hack into the database.

How to disable Wi-Fi Sense and why

Microsoft stores passwords in its database. Security can be breached at any time. If it can happen to LastPass, it can happen to Microsoft or others. No one can guarantee 100% security. The type of encryption used to store passwords is not mentioned anywhere on the net. He just mentions that passwords are encrypted – although I’m sure it will be a very good encryption.

If you want to disable Wi-Fi Sense after reading it, follow these steps :

Open device parameters. Click Network and Internet. Scroll down to find Manage Wi-Fi settings. Click on it to open the next window.

This window allows you to do this:

  1. Connect to suggested open access points
  2. Connect to networks shared by my contacts.

You must set Option 2 to Off.

Once you turn it off, you won’t be able to access other people’s computers, which is good because they can’t hack into your computer or connect to your computer – the button works both ways to disable Wi-Fi Sense.

Disable the 3 available options :

  • Outlook.com contacts
  • Skype contacts
  • Facebook friends.

Close the Settings application. You have now disabled Wi-Fi Sense and others can no longer use your Wi-Fi. I turned it off because I consider it a danger – as well as the use of public hot spots. If you are in an enterprise environment, you can disable Wi-Fi Sense from the registry.
