Microsoft took some time to regain its competitiveness in the browser market, but the company has finally released a browser that is worth using in the new Microsoft Edge based on Google Edge. The new Microsoft browser has been recognized for its speed and ease of use on several platforms, including smartphones.
However, Microsoft Edge is not for everyone. If you are satisfied with Chrome or Firefox, you probably don’t need to switch to another Microsoft browser yet. You can easily bypass Edge when you are not using it. However, if you want to learn how to completely remove Microsoft Edge from Windows 10, you can take the following steps.
Can I uninstall Microsoft Edge from Windows 10?
Answer: it depends on the circumstances. Currently, there are two versions of Microsoft Edge that you can install on your computer and the way you can remove them is different.
If you installed an old Microsoft Edge browser that uses Microsoft’s own browser engine and has a different interface, you cannot remove it directly. However, starting from Windows 10 version 2004, this version of Edge is automatically replaced by the new version of Edge for Chrome.
Disable Edge by changing the file name
- Press Windows + I to launch the Explorer. Click “This computer” in the left navigation area and go to the next file path:
C: \ Windows \ SystemApps - Find the following folder in the “MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe” directory.
- right click on the folder and select “Properties”.
- In Properties, follow this guide to apply the folder.
- If you own the folder, right-click the folder again and select “Rename”. Note that you will need an administrator account to perform this process.
- Rename the folder “MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe_OLD”. You can rename it to anything you like, but remember to add text after the source folder name if you want to re-enable Edge.
- Reboot your computer and see if you still have Edge enabled.
Change the default browser
The only convenient and recommended way to disable Microsoft Edge is to change the default browser settings. As mentioned earlier, there is no easy way to remove or disable Edge permanently. So, you can do the following steps to prevent Edge browser from opening web content.

Use the uninstall option to delete the Edge browser
Now most users are struggling with the latest version of Windows 10, namely 1909 and 2004. Our internal computers also have Microsoft Edge built in. Surprisingly, the removal option is available on some models, one of which is our Asus ROG. We suspect that OEM software plays a role in this, but it would be nice to enable the normal uninstall option before trying other methods from this list.
Although it is possible to remove Microsoft Edge based on Chromium, you cannot remove an old Microsoft Edge using this procedure. If you want to remove the latter, you should skip this method and run the Powershell command instead.
