It’s not as difficult as you might think to understand how to use the PS4 DualShock 4 controller on a PC. Sony’s DualShock 4 controller for the PlayStation 4 – and other PS4 controllers, for that matter – is compatible with most PCs and surprisingly easy to connect, so you can play your favourite PlayStation games and PC titles on your computer.
But why use a PS4 controller on your PC, you may ask? The PS4 DualShock 4 controller is a fantastic choice for a gamepad for this scenario. Its layout includes all the buttons needed for most PC games with a controller, and you can even use its trackpad as mouse input if you need it. The only real drawback is that the audio input of the controller is not currently supported. So you’ll need to plug your headphones directly into your computer if you want to use it (or use a pair of wireless headphones instead).
All you need is the controller, a Windows or Mac PC and a USB cable to get started. You can also use the PS4 Wireless Controller with your PC via your computer’s built-in Bluetooth or a separate Sony PlayStation 4 DualShock Wireless USB adapter dongle that plugs into your PC’s USB port. Any Bluetooth adapter that supports Bluetooth 2 and above should also work.
If you don’t know how to set up the PS4 DualShock 4 controller on a PC, we explain everything you need to know here.

Connect your Wired DualShock Controller to your Computer
Connecting your wired PlayStation 4 controller to your Windows 10 computer is easy with the latest updates for Windows 10, with native DS4 controller support.
Just plug it in and Windows will automatically install the driver and configure everything for you.
Connect via DS4Windows
Although this solution requires some installation effort, it’s still the best way to get your PC and DualShock 4 controller talking without any big problems. You can connect your DualShock 4 controller to your PC via DS4Windows, a third party application, in wired or wireless mode (if your PC is equipped with Bluetooth). Unless you purchase the adapter, this is the best option if you plan to play games via Origin, UPlay, GoG or other PC gaming portals.
DS4Windows essentially claims to use an Xbox 360 controller, but you still have access to motion control and even the touchpad for many games.
- Download the latest version of DS4Windows, which can be found on the official website of the application
- Extract it with an archive manager such as WinRAR or 7Zip. You will then receive two files, DS4Windows and DS4Update.
- Double-click DS4Windows to start the installer, which will bring up the following dialog box
- Follow the instructions on the screen, starting with the driver installation. The installation is quick, so you don’t have to wait long. Click Install 360 Driver if you are using Windows 7 or earlier-the driver is preinstalled on Windows 8 and 10 computers.
- Once you have completed both installations, your controller is ready to connect. Simply connect the DualShock 4 to your PC with a micro-USB cable (used for most Android phones). This will also charge the DualShock 4’s battery, but to use the DualShock 4 wirelessly, you will need to connect the controller to your PC via Bluetooth.
- Press and hold the PS button on your DualShock 4 for three seconds, or until the light bar starts flashing.
- Open the Bluetooth settings on your PC.
- Establish a connection with the wireless controller.
- When prompted to enter a pairing code, enter “0000”.
- Click Finish in the DS4Windows setup program.
