  2. Let it scan your computer.
  3. The tool will then repair your computer.

A strange bug of unknown origin hit Windows 7 computers this week, according to several online reports.

Windows 7 users reported that whenever they try to shut down or reboot their system, they receive a pop-up message that says, “You don’t have permission to shut down this computer.”

The cause of the error is not known at the time of writing.

Over the past two days, users have been scratching their heads to find solutions to the problem. The good news is that they have found at least a temporary workaround and an unofficial solution to solve the problem.

Windows 7 will now be discontinued by Microsoft as of January 14, 2020. Microsoft will no longer publish security patches for consumers, except for users who have purchased the “Advanced Security Updates” (ESU) option. Windows 7 remains a very popular operating system, as described in this article. This will eventually change as Microsoft is no longer interested in supporting or selling Windows 7.

Using the Group Policy Editor

  • Press + R to open the Execute dialog box.
  • Type gpedit.msc and press Enter to open the Local Group Policy Editor application.
  • In the Local Group Policy on the left, find Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options.
  • Locate the User Account Control option on the right: Run all administrators in administration approval mode.
  • Double-click this option, and in the next dialog box, select Enable.
  • Force all group policy options to apply by running gpupdate /force from Run or a command prompt.
  • Reboot or shut down the operating system. This should be done without any problems.

Enable LUA using the Registry Editor

  • Open the tab editor
  • Navigate to the following location where the registry key is available
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE_SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Window\Current Version\Policies\ System
  • Find EnableLUA and double-click on the value to change it.
  • Set the value to 1 to make it active. If you use 0, it is treated as a handicap.

Workaround

Another suggestion is to press “CTL+ALT+DEL then restart from the red icon in the lower right corner”, which is certainly a faster workaround that might be worth trying, just in case.

Conclusion

Even if Windows 7, as mentioned above, is no longer officially supported, Microsoft might feel obliged to fix this problem, as well as the wallpaper version, if only because of some conspiracy theories that inevitably circulate that this is how the software giant wants to “persuade” people to switch to Windows 10.

Of course, you can always switch from Windows 7 to Windows 10 for free, or, as others have pointed out, there are alternative operating systems, and you can always go to the hills of Linux instead.
