Slack is a communication and collaboration tool that represents the backend of more than 600,000 companies. Remember that more than a billion messages are sent every week via Slack! It’s a great way to do business, as long as it works properly. But for many users, Slack seems to have connection problems.
The reason for your problems with the Slack connection may be on their side (server) or your Internet. A recent article from Gizmodo indicates that Slack will publish an update for his desktop application. This update should improve loading times by up to 33%, reduce memory usage by up to 50%, connect waiting calls up to 10 times faster and completely eliminate connection error messages.
What are the causes of connection problems?
A number of factors can influence connectivity, but these are the most common ones we hear about:
- Antivirus software or security settings
- An obsolete version of the Slack Desktop application
- Obsolete web browsers, plug-ins or extensions
- Breakdowns or interruptions of third party services
- An error with app-storage or slack servers

Check network settings
Slack must have a permanent connection between our mail server and members’ applications or browsers. Slack uses WebSockets on port 443 for this purpose.
Proxies and firewalls can sometimes interrupt this connection. If someone using Slack cannot connect from a specific location, or if there is a WebSocket error in our Slack connection test, you will need to adjust your proxy or firewall to keep the connection to Slack open. Here is the procedure to follow:
- Visit https://my.slack.com/help/urls and make a white list of all the URLs you provide. If your environment requires access to multiple workstations and/or orgs, visit this page from each workspace.
- Verify that your proxy uses SSL encryption. If this is the case, the proxy must support WebSockets or you must enable the following domains: *.slack-msgs.com wss-primary.slack.com wss-backup.slack.com wss-mobile.slack.com
- Network administrators can restrict access to specific workspaces by injecting proxy headers into their network. The header injection solution has the same network requirements as described above.
Run the Slack connection test
- Connect to your relaxed workspace.
- Visit https://my.slack.com/help/test to check connections.
- See the WebSockets section for the results of WebSocket (Flannel[Primary]) and WebSocket (Flannel[Backup]).
- A successful test shows the icon marked with a circle.
- A failed test will display the warning icon instead.
- In case of error, contact your network administrator or Internet service provider.
