Updated November 2024: Stop getting error messages and slow down your system with our optimization tool. Get it now at this link
  1. Download and install the repair tool here.
  2. Let it scan your computer.
  3. The tool will then repair your computer.

Older versions of Windows such as 7, 8 or 8.1 did not have a standard PDF viewer pre-installed. Since the release of Windows 10, users do not necessarily need to install a third-party tool to view PDF files, as the PDF viewing function is integrated with Microsoft Edge. Therefore, when installing Windows 10, Microsoft Edge appears not only as the default Internet browser, but also as the default PDF viewer.

When someone clicks on a PDF file, the system automatically starts MS Edge. Unfortunately, many people have reported problems with Edge when opening PDF files. Usually, this problem occurs after the installation of Windows 10 Creators Update or sometimes after regular updates.

Suppose you are trying to access the website in Microsoft Edge, could you please try to access the website in another web browser, such as Google Chrome/Internet Explorer, and see if it works?

Changing the default PDF display setting in MS Edge

To set the default settings for PDF display in MS Edge, follow the steps below:

Set MS Edge as the default program to open PDF files

1. reach the control panel and open it.
2. On the home page of the control panel, select Standard programs.
3. select “Assign a file type or protocol to a program”.
4. search for the PDF entry and select the Edit Program option.
5. When a pop-up window appears on the screen, select the Microsoft Edge program to open the PDF file.
6. Select and check Always use this application to open.pdf.
7. click OK to save the changes.

Check if you are using Windows 10 N or KN editions.

By default, Windows 10 N and Windows 10 KN versions do not support opening PDF files in Edge because they do not have Windows Media features. According to this Microsoft page, Edge Browser cannot open PDF files without the Windows Media features installed.

To check the edition, right-click on this PC icon in the File Explorer navigation pane, then click Properties.

So, if you are on version N or KN of Windows 10, please download and install the Microsoft Windows 10 Media Features Pack.

Clear the cache in Microsoft Edge

It is a good idea to clear the cache regularly to avoid website loading problems, unnecessary interruptions and better performance. To clear the cache, proceed as follows

Launch Microsoft Edge. Go to Settings. Under Clear Navigation, under Data, click on Choose what to clear.

Select the Data and cached files option and click Clear.

CONCLUSION

Most problems when opening PDF files will be due to one of the above causes. It is also important to ensure that your operating system supports PDF format. For example, Microsoft Edge is not only the default browser under Windows 10, but also the default PDF reader. You can change this to make Reader or Acrobat your default PDF reader.
