How to turn on Windows defender in Windows 8

Microsoft has detected the growing threat of malware and spyware and it launched Windows Defender. It is introduced with Windows XP and continued to Windows 7 and in Windows 8 it provided an enhanced version of Defender which protects against the malware and integrated Security Essentials into one. When you install any security suite then Windows will turn off the Defender.

If the trial period of that particular security suite expires, the Windows defender will not enable itself again. Your PC will be then open to malware and trojans. In this case you need to enable the Windows Defender manually, let use here how to do it.

 How to turn on Windows defender in Windows 8

  • Go to the Start menu or Start screen and then type Defender. This will open Windows Defender in the list and then click on it. This will launch the Windows Defender program.

  • This will open the window as shown below, showing that the Defender is turn off and it is not protecting your computer. If you get this message, search for Action center from Start Menu and run that.
  • In the following window click on the Security tab and this check which program is handling the spyware and malware. If you like to enable Windows Defender instead of other security suite such as Norton or Avast, uninstall this from Control Panel.

  • After uninstalling, search again for Defender from Start menu and if the defender is turned off, you will get a message in a small window and also a link to turn it on.
  • Windows Defender main window will open on your PC. It will shown an update button and update it, because virus definitions will be outdated.
  • After updating it, you will find a Green bar with a message showing that Windows defender is up to date.
  • Click on the tools option and then check Real-time protection in the left pane. Also check the option Scan downloaded files and attachments and Scan programs that run on my computer. We recommend to check all these options.
