It’s a bad idea to remove your login password from your PC – unless you have a computer at home that no one else will ever touch. In that case, why not delete your password and eliminate this first step?

We must reiterate that a password and biometric authentication or at least a PIN code remains a good idea in case your PC is lost or stolen or if someone should come by and decide to intervene. But if you are sure that such risks do not apply, read on. You can also use our technique described below and renew the password request if conditions change, for example if you have a guest or a new roommate.

Why you probably shouldn’t do this

There are some caveats that you should consider before you even consider using the techniques we cover in this article.

  • You must use a local account for the password removal trick to work. You cannot remove your password if you are using a Microsoft account. If you are using a Microsoft account and want to do so, you must reset your account to a local account.
  • Removing the password from your computer can be a security risk. Anyone can access it by simply logging in to the account. However, this still requires physical access. If you do not have a password for a local account, you are no more vulnerable to outside intrusion.
  • If you ensure that an administrator account does not have a password, malicious applications running on your PC could theoretically gain increased access to Windows.
  • If you only have one account on your Windows PC, it is better to set up Windows to log you in automatically instead of deleting your password, but even this is problematic. We’ll show you how to do this later in this article, and we’ll also point out the specific security risks involved.
