Some time ago, we identified the location of the folder where Windows 8 Metro applications will be installed. The next question that comes to mind is whether there is a way to change the default installation path for Windows Store applications. Fortunately, there is a way to do this. You can change locations when you run out of space on your hard drive. Of course, you can move the default folder for user profile folders or the default folder for program files to another drive – but you can also change the default installation folder for Windows Store applications if you wish.

To change the default Windows 8 Store Apps installation folder location, you must change the Windows registry. To do this, press Win+R to display the Run dialog box. Type’regedit’ and press Enter. A message on TechNet tells you that the settings are in the next key, so navigate to it:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionAppx
Right-click and select’Permissions’ from the context menu.

Once you have accepted the registration key PackageRoot, you can right click on it and select Modify. Enter the new path to the folder where you want to install Windows applications. You could say D:WindowsApps.
Note that you cannot update installed applications until you change the default location, as these applications still have their data at the original location. To avoid possible update errors, it is recommended to uninstall the applications, change the installation location, and then reinstall the Windows Store applications.

UPDATE : Microsoft does not want us to change the 🙂 installation directories and has therefore changed the settings. It doesn’t seem to work under Windows 8.1, but you can use the PowerShell script above and see if it helps.
