Microsoft announces new Skype for Business preview in Office 365

Microsoft has today announced the new features for Skype for Business preview version that brings in the capabilities that enhance the existing performance and offers complete and global enterprise grade communication solution as a part of Office 365 Suite. Let us have a look at its features.


  • Skype meeting broadcast: It is made available to the Office 365 users worldwide those who are eligible and enables broadcasting the meetings in Skype for Business up to 10,000 people at a time over the internet and users can attend either from the browser or any device. It brings the ability to easily host large virtual meetings such as internal town hall kind of meetings and public webinars. The latest version also includes integration with Bing Pulse which brings in real time polling ability, sentiment tracking and Yammer that enables the attendee dialogue during broadcast.
  • PSTN conferencing: This feature is currently available only to the US customers that allows the people invited to Skype for Business meeting in Office 365 to join the meeting either through dialing from landline or mobile phone. The traditional dial-in capability has been added to the simple and single touch join options on smartphone, browser, PC and let the people to join the meeting even if they are unable to access to internet. PSTN conferencing feature let the people to add others to the meeting by dialing out.
  • Cloud PBX with PSTN calling: This feature is also currently available to the US customers only which brings in the ability to make and receive the traditional phone calls in the Skype for Business app and let you to manage these calls like hold, resume, forward and transfer. Skype for Business Preview is developed on the enterprise voice technology that is already available in Lync Server and Skype for Business Server. Microsoft also mentioned that, it is going to ship Cloud PBX for the customers worldwide, later this year which comes with the configuration button for customers which enables you to use the existing on premises phone lines for inbound and outbound calling.

If you are the existing Office 365 user, then you can register for the above previews. In this regard, Microsoft has also made an announcement that AT&T, BT, Equinix, Colt, Level 3 communications, Orange Business Services, TATA communications, Verizon, Telstra and Vodafone will deliver direct connections to Office 365 Skype for Business users later this year.
