How to secure Windows PC with EMET

EMET is the stands for Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit, which is the Microsoft’s toolkit which is one of the best, but lesser known security toolkit from Microsoft. EMET is simple but most effective program which uses some specific hardened mitigation techniques such as export address table access filtering, data execution prevention, structured exception handler overwrite protection and more which will add the additional security features to protect the installed programs from being hacked.

Internet Explorer, Java and other are some easily vulnerable programs, so EMET can secure those programs from exploitation. Techniques that were used by EMET are already integrated into the Windows operating system and EMET will offer an simple User interface to deal with the advanced security settings. EMET doesn’t work fine with the old software, so if you are using old softwares then this is not for you, as it may lead some false positives and even applications will crash sometimes.

  • After restarting you can see all the programs that are being protected by EMET in the process section of main window. Applications that are protected will have the green checkmark in Running EMET section.
  • You can either enable or disable each mitigation policy in the App configuration window individually for every application.
  • If you want to add the new program then click on Add application button on the ribbon and select the app and click on open to complete the process.
  • After adding it will be shown in Application configuration window and you are allowed to set individual mitigation policies.
  • To change the security level, click on Quick Profile name on Ribbon UI.

  • If EMET detects any vulnerable programs then it will restrict the app from starting and it will display a message.

If you don’t like the EMET interface then you can change it by choosing any of the skins that are available from Skin drop-down menu of ribbon. EMET is designed mainly for the advanced users like administrators and it is super strict in applying the rules to the applications. It is perfect tool to be used by any windows users, either it be Windows 8, XP or Vista. Though some comparability issues will raise, but it deserves the security it offer.
